The Red Steel, captained by West Indies star all-rounder Dwayne Bravo and also starring his brother, Darren, have experienced a remarkable, roller-coaster 2015 season in the CPL, starting off with a rainout in their very first game, followed by three straight losses, with the games spread over three weeks.
But Sunday’s CPL Final will be their seventh game in the last 12 days, and they’ll be going for their sixth victory in that span.
While the Tridents, who feature West Indies international stars Kieron Pollard and Jason Holder — who at just 23-years-old captained the West Indies team to the quarterfinals of the Cricket World Cup in March — have held first place on the CPL table for almost every day of the 6-week season, the Red Steel have shown that a late surge can be just as effective as steady dominance, given the brief, 10-game season and three-game playoff structure.
But by finishing first, the Tridents will be well-rested, earning a bye directly into the Final.
The Red Steel had to defeat the Jamaica Tallawahs in the opening playoff elimination match, and then on Saturday, they put together a six-wicket drubbing of the Guyana Amazon Warriors — a team that beat Trinidad & Tobago on the final day of the group stage season — to get into today’s Final match.
The Red Steel restricted Guyana to just 108 runs, then topped that total in the second innings with nine balls remaining.
Can the Barbados Tridents stop the Red Steel momentum and capture their second straight Caribbean Premier League title?
