Guillermo Del Toro Says He’s Still Working On A Game With Hideo Kojima
Guillermo Del Toro said in an interview with IGN that he and Metal Gear Solid creator still plan on working together on a new game project despite video game publisher Konami cancelling their previous collaborative project, Silent Hills.
Del Toro and Kojima were originally slated to work together on Silent Hills, the sequel to the long-running horror franchise of video games that started on the original Playstation. After Konami had reworked their corporate structure, the Silent Hills project was brought to a close despite having some serious star power attached between Hideo Kojima, Guillermo Del Toro, and Walking Dead star Norman Reedus.
The only tangible product that came from the planned Kojima and Del Toro collaboration was the short teaser/playable reveal for Silent Hills called P.T. (Playable Teaser) that served as the announcement for the new game. In the wake of Silent Hills‘ cancellation, Konami pulled the free-to-download P.T., preventing anyone who hadn’t already downloaded the game reveal from grabbing a copy.
Speaking to IGN, Del Toro talks about what the cancelled collaboration would’ve felt like and how much work got done on it.
“We were in the planning stages, and it’s a shame it’s not going to happen,” Del Toro said. “We were talking about really pushing the boundaries of the new consoles, and making the game really mess with your head. One of the great moments in Metal Gear [Solid] was Psycho Mantis. The idea that a game can actually interact with you, and stuff like that.”
It’s too early to say what the product of this relationship will end up being, but given Guillermo Del Toro’s typically horror-inspired style and the planning that already went into Silent Hills, it might be safe to assume the two will again focus on something rather spooky.
So what are the two visionaries up to until then? Del Toro has a movie coming out in a few months — the Mia Wasikowska-led haunted house picture Crimson Peak — and Hideo Kojima’s next (and possibly final) Metal Gear Solid V hits at the beginning of September. Del Toro has also been busy overseeing the FX series, The Strain.
After the Konami restructuring, Hideo Kojima’s video game development company, Kojima Productions, disbanded, leaving the future of Kojima’s projects in question. Konami says they’re still committed to continuing the Metal Gear Solid franchise (easily their biggest seller), but after Kojima’s name was removed from packaging for the new game, it probably won’t be with Kojima’s involvement.
For now you can watch the original Silent Hills teaser and reflect on what could have been between Guillermo Del Toro and Hideo Kojima.
