‘The Comedians’ TV Show Cancelled By FX After One Season

The Comedians TV show has been cancelled by FX after only one season.

Executive producer Ben Wexler broke the news that FX had decided not to renew Billy Crystal’s sitcom following its freshman season on Twitter Thursday morning.

“#TheComedians is cancelled at FX. I could not be more proud of the work we all did,” Wexler tweeted.

The comedy series, which starred Billy Crystal and Josh Gad, never gained a large audience, and was not nominated for any Emmy awards when the nominations were released last week, according to the L.A. Times.

Variety reported, via MSN, that the sitcom’s views lagged from the start when it premiered in April. The show only brought in 878,000 same-night viewers and 1.18 million viewers in Live+3. The finale, which aired on June 25, garnered 509,000 and approximately 667,000 in Live+3.

Crystal also released a statement, via Twitter, following the show’s cancellation announcement.

“To fans of The Comedians thanks for your support. I am so proud of the work we did and of all the people we did it with. #don’tgetit,” he tweeted.

Prior to The Comedians premiere, Wexler spoke highly of Crystal and Gad, praising them for being comedic geniuses.

“This has been the most gratifying experience of my career by far, and it’s also been incredibly exciting and incredibly fun. It’s really, really hard, but at the end of the day, it’s actually really simple because it’s just funny people being funny. When you give people who are genuinely hilarious the opportunity to be hilarious, it works.”

“It makes my job so much easier knowing that what’s on the page, they’re going to nail, and then, they’ll almost certainly add to what’s on the page,” he added. “You’ve got people who are incredibly quick on their feet and are really nimble, and that shows up onscreen. The de facto product of having guys who can improvise, it’s sort of like having more writers.”

Wexler was very optimistic that the comedy was going to do well on television. Unfortunately, the show apparently didn’t fit into the “comedy landscape.”

“All I can do is hope it fits well in the TV comedy landscape,” Wexler continued. “Your goal is to fit into the comedy landscape and also to not fit into it. I think that the shows that transcend, there is no sister show like it. Humbly, I think this is that.”
