Fans will be excited to learn that Frank Randall will be included in some capacity in the coming season of Outlander . In an interview during Comic-Con with costar Sam Heughan , Caitriona Balfe told Access Hollywood that she had done a scene with Tobias Menzies, who plays Randall, for the new season, and it included a time jump to the 1940s.
“We did some stuff back in the ’40s and it’s beautiful. Ron [D. Moore] wrote that stuff, and yeah, I think Tobias and I just really – I don’t think either of us felt that we’d had such great material … It’s just fantastic. It’s fantastic stuff to play.”
It isn’t clear exactly when this scene will occur in Season 2, and whether it will be a flashback or if Claire will be time travelling to the ’40s. Whichever it turns out to be, Balfe added that she was glad to see Frank again.
“It was great to play some of that Frank and Claire stuff again. I always enjoy it. It’s just very different… It’s a very different relationship than Claire and Jamie have, and it was great scenes. It’s nice not to be around the perilous Black Jack Randall, for sure.”
Meanwhile, author Diana Gabaldon recently revealed to Zap2it that Season 2 would see major changes from the first season, including a number of new cast members. With that in mind, Gabaldon stated that Frances de la Tour’s Mother Hildegarde would be one new character fans should be excited to see in the new season.
“Probably Mother Hildegard because she’s very familiar to all of the book readers and all they already love her to start with, so they’ll be especially excited to see her and to see how well she’s brough to the scene… She’s just fabulous.”
At the same time, Moore explained to VC Post that the new season would “look and feel completely different” from the first. “There were no sets or costumes or props or anything from the first season that we could use for the beginning of the second, so we really had to rebuild the show. You will be watching a different Outlander than what you saw in Season 1. Eventually it does return to Scotland and gets involved in the war and so on. The first half is this completely new show.”
Season 2 of Outlander is expected to premiere in 2016.
