Calum Hood And 5 Seconds Of Summer Declared Better Than One Direction
Calum Hood and his band-mates in 5 Seconds Of Summer have been working hard to shake off their label as a boy band. Hood and has pals got their big break in the music industry when they supported One Direction on tour and, as a result, they picked up a large section of One Direction’s fan base. For Calum and band mates Luke Hemmings, Ashton Irwin, and Michael Clifford coming to prominence as the support act for the world’s biggest boy band has been something of a double edged sword. Whilst the exposure they received will have been very welcome, Hood and 5SOS have been struggling ever since to shake the boy band label.
It was recently reported in Inquisitr that 5SOS may finally be winning the battle to be seen as a bona-fide pop-punk band. It was even reported that Hood and his mates may be the saviors of the pop-punk genre. It seems that comparisons between One Direction and 5SOS are based purely on the fact that both bands consist of four young men and that they toured together. They may also share the same “tween-age,” mainly female fan base, but in many ways, the differences could not be more stark.
The main, though often ignored, difference is that Hood and his mates can actually play their instruments and they write their own material. 5SOS also have a much more traditional route into the music business, whereas One Direction were pulled together by Simon Cowell for his reality TV show, X-Factor.
After Hood and 5SOS performed at the Concord Pavilion on Tuesday, July 21, the San Jose Mercury was moved to write that 5SOS “will not be the next One Direction” because they are much better than that.
“There’s very little about this band that reminds you of One Direction. As a musical entity, 5SOS has far more to offer than One Direction. It has a better song book and performs better on stage. And while One Direction has probably already peaked as a concert act, 5SOS should only get better.”
The Times Standard also picked up on the differences between Hood’s band and 1D, they even drew comparisons between 5SOS and long established pop-punk heroes like Green Day and Blink-182. High praise, indeed. They also praise 5SOS and take a sideswipe at One Direction by saying Hood and Co. “don’t do dance routines or sing songs that sound like they should only be aired on Radio Disney. Instead, they play their instruments — and play them quite well.”
What do Inquisitr readers think? Have One Direction had their day? Are Calum Hood and 5SOS a better band?
