NBA Trade Rumors: Ty Lawson Gave Up Guaranteed Contract In Houston Rockets Trade With Denver Nuggets
NBA trade rumors confirm Ty Lawson restructured his contract for the Houston Rockets. These NBA trade rumors indicated that Lawson now has a non-guaranteed contract for the 2016-17 season, taking away some of the risk that the Rockets have in this deal. A report from Yahoo! Sports explains how it all went down. The Rockets agreed to the deal with the Denver Nuggets, contingent upon Lawson making the final season of his current deal non-guaranteed.
The Rockets will now owe Lawson $12.4 million for the 2015-16 NBA season and then $13.2 million for the following season. Should the team be pleased with his performance in the first year, they could keep him on by guaranteeing the second season. If they become displeased, the team can simply waive Lawson and get out of paying him for that second year. It’s a win-win situation, as the Rockets take little risk, and Lawson gets the chance to prove himself.
As previously reported by the Inquisitr, Ty Lawson has to fix a reputation that was damaged by a second DUI arrest this offseason. The Denver Nuggets were done with the star point guard at that point, which led to many NBA trade rumors popping up. It was the Houston Rockets that stepped up to make a deal, agreeing to send Kostas Papanikolaou, Pablo Prigioni, Joey Dorsey, Nick Johnson, and a lottery-protected 2016 first-round draft pick to Denver for Lawson.
Lawson is the type of player that can be a difference maker on an NBA court. If he can play up to his potential and clean up his off-the-court behavior, the Rockets may have made the steal of the offseason. He is just 27 years old and last season averaged 15.2 points, 9.6 assists, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.2 steals per game for the Nuggets. An underrated playmaker, he could be the perfect addition to a Rockets team already led by James Harden and Dwight Howard.
While teams like the Los Angeles Lakers, New York Knicks, and Philadelphia 76ers were linked to him in one fashion or another during the offseason, he will get a chance to show off his skills in Texas this year. The potential is there that Lawson will be a free agent either in the next offseason or the following one, giving him every incentive to put up huge numbers for the Rockets. These NBA trade rumors got the team exactly what it needed to compete with the LA Clippers and San Antonio Spurs. The bonus was that it comes with very little risk now.
