Keke Palmer Talks About ‘Scream Queens’ And That Brutal Sorority House

In recent months, fans have heard from Scream Queens stars like Emma Roberts and Jamie Lee Curtis, but some stars, like Keke Palmer, have remained silent on the premiere of the new Ryan Murphy horror comedy… until now. Keke Palmer is now another one of those Scream Queens sorority sisters to give a little tease about the premiere of the new series.

Keke admits that the cast of girls has grown together through the filming of Scream Queens, as though they were really a part of a college sorority.

“It feels like we’re our own little sorority house,” Palmer said. “We have seven, eight of us, and we all have so many different personalities.”

Unlike Murphy’s American Horror Story, which airs on FX, Scream Queens will air on network television, which some indicate will limit the Scream Queens series from committing fully to the horror aspects fans expect from a show billed as a “Heathers meets Halloween hybrid.” Ms. Palmer thinks horror fans should still give it a chance.

“I think that he is keeping that same, heightened, extreme grounded-ness. How he does it, I have no idea. But that is very much so a part of Scream Queens. And also, the comedy. He finds the balance in light of the dark. It’s fun to play.”

Ms. Palmer has been a fan of Murphy’s for a few years now, having been an avid follower of American Horror Story from the beginning, so it seems Keke knows just what she is talking about.

“I loved season one, and I was like: ‘If I ever got a chance to work with this guy, it would be so cool and fun,'” said Scream Queen’s Keke Palmer. “Because he’s so creative! That’s what you want as an actor: to be pushed.”

The best and worst thing about working with such a large ensemble cast as there is on Scream Queens is the fact that there is only so much time for each actress within the confines of the series. Ms. Palmer credits Ryan Murphy for managing everyone’s time fairly.

“A lot of times people say there’s only seven stories, there’s only seven characters. A little bit of that is true because … there’s only a certain amount of concepts and perspectives that maybe we’re willing to look at things as,” Keke added. “But he does a really good job at not doing that. I guess that’s why they call him a genius: This guy is not about playing by the rules. He’s about switching it up.”

Scream Queens premieres on September 22 on Fox.
