Leonard DiCaprio Fights A Bear And Tries For An Oscar Win With ‘The Revenant’ [Video]
The Revenant is the latest movie for actor Leonardo DiCaprio. The movie is based on Michael Punke’s 2003 novel of the same name, and is partially based on the life of Hugh Glass, a frontiersman known for his cross-country trek after being mauled by a bear in the early 1820s.
The Revenant was shot using only natural light and was filmed on location in Calgary. Due to harsh weather conditions and limited shooting hours, the snow eventually ran out and this movie had to move to Gortex on Argentina’s southern tip in a bid to get the movie completed before its expected Christmas Day release date.
The synopsis for The Revenant is as follows.
“Inspired by true events, The Revenant is an immersive and visceral cinematic experience capturing one man’s epic adventure of survival and the extraordinary power of the human spirit. In an expedition of the uncharted American wilderness, legendary explorer Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) is brutally attacked by a bear and left for dead by members of his own hunting team. In a quest to survive, Glass endures unimaginable grief as well as the betrayal of his confidant John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy). Guided by sheer will and the love of his family, Glass must navigate a vicious winter in a relentless pursuit to live and find redemption. The Revenant is directed and co-written by renowned filmmaker, Academy Award-winner Alejandro G. Iñárritu (Birdman, Babel).”
Some outlets are now hoping Leonardo DiCaprio gets the Oscar nod he deserves for his gritty interpretation of Hugh Glass in The Revenant. Although, as Forbes pointed out, perhaps fans shouldn’t wish for an Oscar win for DiCaprio if it means he keeps selecting roles such as this one. Others suspect this movie may be the one that revives the Western genre.
According to The Guardian, the term “revenant” refers to one who has been left for dead but then returns to the living. A kind of old-fashioned zombie reference, if you will. Although, in all fairness, DiCaprio’s character does not actually die and re-animate, but he does go through more of a metaphysical death and rebirth during his 200-mile journey.
