Philadelphia Phillies Call Up Top Pitching Prospect Aaron Nola, Will Debut July 21

As previously noted by the Inquisitr, the Philadelphia Phillies are shopping pitching ace Cole Hamels, and are looking for a boatload of talent in exchange. The Los Angeles Dodgers and Houston Astros figure to be two of the teams that will seek out the left-hander.

Earlier today, the Phillies called up their top pitching prospect in 22-year-old Aaron Nola, possibly foreshadowing the potential for a blockbuster Hamels trade. Nola was originally selected by Philly with the seventh overall pick of the 2014 MLB Draft.

Outside Pitch MLB reports that between 18 starts in Double-A Reading and Triple-A Lehigh this season, Nola posts a record of 10-4 with a 2.39 earned run average. Nola will make his big league debut on July 21 against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Philadelphia is currently sitting in last place in the National League East, with a record of 29-62, per ESPN.

Here are some immediate reactions from Twitter.

As a former standout of Louisiana State University, Aaron’s last name Nola seems quite fitting.

What do you make of the move by the Phillies? Are they rushing a young star to the big leagues far too soon in order to keep up with the current trend of other teams?
