Walmart Attacks Amazon Prime: Deep Discounts Without Paying Extra
Yesterday, both Walmart and Amazon Prime delivered the deals that were supposed to be even better than Black Friday. Amazon Prime Day has been the talk of the town the last few weeks, but not much has been said about Walmart’s rivalry.
When Amazon Prime announced their killer deals, Walmart was not to be outdone. They returned with an attack on Amazon’s campaign, saying that they could deliver just as many great deals on their online store, except their deals would come without the extra cost.
Walmart’s marketing campaign is centered around the idea that everybody can get great deals, not just those who pay $99 per year for a Prime membership. Yesterday only, they offered a series of deals that were supposed to match that of Amazon Prime’s deals, complete with free shipping.
Towards the middle of the sale, the deals that Walmart offered didn’t seem to quite match up to the deals that Amazon had, plus they were only offering standard shipping rather than two day. Besides that, the deals didn’t look to be quite at the caliber of Amazon’s deals.
Amazon reported in the middle of the day yesterday that “Prime Day peak order rates have already surpassed 2014 Black Friday. Prime members have bought tens of thousands of Fire TV Sticks, 35,000 Lord of the Rings Blu-Ray sets, 28,000 Rubbermaid sets, and 4,000 Echos in 15 minutes. The Kate Spade purse was gone in less than a minute. The 1.2K of $999 TVs sold out in less than 10 minutes and there are thousands more deals coming. New deals start every ten minutes until late tonight.”
Amazon isn’t shy about sharing their successes. Thanks to this deal, they have likely received thousands more Prime members, as well as subscribers to some of their new services, Amazon Photos and Amazon Music.
Walmart wasn’t so keen to share their successes during the big day. They mentioned that their customers have been “flocking to our site,” but they had not released any specifics. Some of their deals included the iPad Mini 2 for just $265 and a 55? RCA flat screen TV for less than $400.
Many believed that their hesitance was a sign of doing slightly worse than Amazon.com, but now we know that they simply wanted to wait for a big reveal at the end. As it turns out, the Walmart.com sale was far better than Amazon Prime Day.
Walmart offered sales that a typical family could actually use, while Amazon had a conglomeration of items that weren’t quite as useful to the everyday person. Overall, Amazon may have had a sales surge of 80 percent, but Walmart created the better day, as far as user experience and happy customers are concerned.
