Deron Williams Signs With Dallas Mavericks: Rumors Indicate Two-Year Deal With Hometown Discount
Deron Williams has officially signed with the Dallas Mavericks. Williams signed a two-year deal with the Mavericks, immediately making him the starting point guard for the team. A report from USA Today on Tuesday (July 14) indicates that he will be paid $10 million, with the second year settling in as a player option. It means he could opt out at the end of the 2015-16 NBA season and get a new deal from Dallas.
As previously reported by the Inquisitr, the Brooklyn Nets bought out the contract of Williams, opting to escape paying the full $43 million owed for the final two years of his deal. Williams was then placed on waivers, with the Mavs signing him as soon as he cleared. Now, the franchise and owner Mark Cuban might be able to salvage an offseason that had been heading in the wrong direction.
It’s no secret that center DeAndre Jordan stated he would sign with the Mavericks, only to turn around and re-sign with the Los Angeles Clippers. The Deron Williams rumors then came at a perfect time, as the veteran point guard let the Brooklyn Nets know that he wanted to head home to Dallas. Now, less than a week later, he signs with Cuban at a nice discount and joins a roster that looks intriguing on paper.
Even though the Mavericks did miss out on Jordan during the NBA offseason, the team did give a max contract to shooting guard Wesley Matthews. He left the Portland Trail Blazers for more money in Dallas, but likely won’t be ready when the regular season begins. Matthews is still battling back from tearing his Achilles last season, meaning he likely still has several more months of recover in front of him. That could also guarantee that when he does return to the active roster, Matthews is well-rested for the season grind.
The Mavericks are also without Monta Ellis and Tyson Chandler for next season, but still have Chandler Parsons and Dirk Nowtizki in the starting lineup. The team traded for Zaza Pachulia, a guy who might battle for the starting center spot. Even with these confirmed Deron Williams rumors, the team managed to stay under the salary cap. It means the front office could still add a piece or two before the 2015-16 NBA season tips off.
