Deron Williams Trade Rumors: Brooklyn Nets Star Wants To Go Play For Dallas Mavericks Through Release Or Trade
Deron Williams trade rumors are back in a surprising way. Williams wants the Nets to trade or release him so that he can go play for the Dallas Mavericks. A fresh report from ESPN already has the former All-Star point guard in talks with the Nets about his future. One of the options is for the Nets to simply release him or offer him a buyout of his current contract.
If the Nets can find a way to part with Williams without having to pay a majority of the salary still owed to him, that could be considered a huge win for the front office. Numerous Deron Williams trade rumors have surfaced because the team owes him $43.3 million over the next two seasons, but has also been very unimpressed with his on-court performance.
Last season with the Brooklyn Nets, he averaged just 13.0 points, 6.6 assits, and 3.5 rebounds per game. Those numbers are far from the nightly double-double that he was getting with the Utah Jazz for years. It’s possible a change of scenery could do him good, but that is also an excuse used quite often in the NBA for a player underperforming in a new city.
Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has not hidden the allure that Williams presents to him. He chased after the point guard when he was getting ready to leave the Utah Jazz, but couldn’t work out a deal to bring him down to Texas. On the other side of the equation, Williams went to high school in Texas, so he would be no stranger to the area. Now it just comes down to all parties working together to land him in a Mavs uniform for the 2015-16 NBA season.
As previously reported by the Inquisitr, the Mavericks have a lot of money left to spend after getting spurned by DeAndre Jordan in free agency. It would be pretty easy for the team to take on another contract, especially if it meant giving the roster some immediate star power. Meanwhile the Brooklyn Nets are trying hard to get away from the extensive luxury tax penalties that the team will incur unless it deals away some of the big contracts.
The easiest scenario for Williams to get from the Nets to the Mavs would be for the teams to agree to a trade. It’s simple, but the Nets would have to take back salaries. Second to that, the Nets could buyout the current contract, saving money in the process and allowing Williams to become a free agent. At that point, Williams could then sign a new deal with the Mavericks.
These are certainly some surprising Deron Williams trade rumors that have come up, but it might make a lot of sense for both franchises in the end. The Brooklyn Nets could get out of paying the full contract and the Dallas Mavericks may get that star point guard Mark Cuban has wanted.
