When Bee Gees singer Robin Gibb fell into a coma more than one week ago doctors weren’t sure if he would pull through, on Sunday Gibb woke up with his friends and family by his side and doctors are now saying it was the singers “iron will” that pulled him out of his coma.
Gibb slipped into his coma while trying to fight through a bout with cancer that several months ago he announced was showing signs of being in remission, according to doctors the singer slipped into the coma as he attempted to battle a combination of illnesses.
Doctors say Gibb battled the odds to regain consciousness but also mentioned that the outlook for the 62-year-old singer is still uncertain as he battles pneumonia, liver failure and advanced bowel cancer.
In a statement released by Robin Gibb’s family Dr. Andrew Thillainayagam, of Imperial College Healthcare said:
“Only three days ago, I warned Robin’s wife, Dwina, son, Robin John, and brother, Barry, that I feared the worst.”
Dr. Thillainayagam added:
“We felt it was very likely that Robin would succumb to what seemed to be insurmountable obstacles to any form of meaningful recovery. As a team, we were all concerned that we might be approaching the realms of futility.
The statement continues:
“It is testament to Robin’s extraordinary courage, iron will and deep reserves of physical strength that he has overcome quite incredible odds to get where he is now.”
Robin Gibb is still weak, requiring oxygen to breath however doctors are monitoring him constantly with the hope that he will soon be able to move out of the intensive care unit.
