‘Elfstones Of Shannara’ TV Show: Terry Brooks Bashes ‘Game Of Thrones,’ ‘Shannara Chronicles’ Comparison
The Elfstones Of Shannara TV series is finally being produced by MTV is finally coming to the small screen – 38 years after the book was first published.
Author Terry Brooks spoke about the plans for the Shannara Chronicles TV show and one of the first comparisons he is hurrying to shoot down is any mention of Game Thrones.
In a related report by the Inquisitr, Jon Snow’s fate in Game Of Thrones Season 6 may have been revealed already, and some people believe Kit Harington’s long locks point to the actor’s return to the series.
When Game Of Thrones first started airing, it became readily apparent just how sexualized George R. R. Martin’s vision was going to be in comparison to the books. Some critics have dismissed GoT as “porn with dragons” and the producers really did hire adult film stars for some of the scenes.
So when The Sword Of Shannara author Terry Brooks was asked if the adaptation of his series would be similar to the Game Of Thrones, he became somewhat irate.
“Don’t mention Game of Thrones to me. We were saying, ‘We don’t want to go that route.’ That’s not what the Shannara books are. They’re a family-oriented fantasy and always have been,” Brooks told Entertainment Weekly. “That’s been one of the strong selling points. Anyone from 10 years of age up that has the reading skills can read these books. We’ve always talked about it as a family drama that anyone can watch.”
Since MTV is associated with producing fairly raunchy productions, you would think they would be an odd fit for producing theShannara Chronicles. Brooks concedes this point but claims the company is changing.
“This is the question that virtually every reader is asking. ‘MTV? Have you lost your mind?’ I kind of like the idea of being first with something. I appreciated the strong pitch that MTV made for this and how willing they were to get behind it and support it, and that’s really what I was looking for, more than anything else. A commitment to the project. That was very persuasive to me, deciding that MTV was the right place for it. MTV is known for reinventing itself.”
