‘Team Fortress 2’ Gun Mettle Update Brings Major Changes, But What Does It Mean For The Future?
Valve released perhaps one of its biggest updates in some time for Team Fortress 2. As explained by the developers themselves, a number of fixes for all classes were applied to level the playing field — but that’s just the tip of the iceberg that is the Gun Mettle update.
Admittedly, much of the fixes to the weapons were bug fixes; guns were adjusted as intended, proper (accurate) descriptions were made, and the like. There’s a lot of bug fixes as well, including fixes that eliminate the ability for classes to do things their class.. wasn’t exactly intended to do.
Still waiting for the significant part of the Team Fortress 2 update? Well, that comes with the Gun Metal campaign. Between the gun changes and the Gun Metal campaign itself, it seems Valve intends to evolve the popular first-person shooter just as it does with its other mainstream title, Dota 2.
What makes us suspect that Valve is up to something? Well, that comes from a video pointed out by none other than Kotaku. Have a look.

As data mined by intrepid Team Fortress 2 players, it looks like competitive multiplayer could be coming to the game. The question is, when? There are no indications that it will be included anytime soon, but the fact that several files exist for a competitive mode does suggest that Valve is taking the idea very seriously.
That being said, these files being in the beta in no way means that Valve actually will add competitive multiplayer to Team Fortress 2.
As for features you most certainly will get your hands on, the update includes a rather beautiful map known as Powerhouse. Interestingly, the map has a significant number of easter eggs that suggest the game may be moving to space in the future.
Team Fortress 2 in space? Sign me up, Valve. Sign me up.
It remains to be seen what the future holds for the game, but Valve is making it clear that it still intends to fully support the frantic first-person shooter years after its release. Just how far will they go? Only time will tell.
