iOS 9 Feature Allows For Temporary App Uninstalls To Make Room For Updates

If you were one of the many iPhone users who tried to update to iOS 8 but didn’t have enough free space, you’ll be happy to learn about Apple’s new feature. iOS updates have lately become known for having large file sizes. The problem with a large update file is that a large percentage of iPhone users buy the 16 gigabyte versions. Unfortunately, a smartphone with just 16 gigabytes can get filled up very quickly.

A lot of iPhone users were simply unable to download and install the iOS 8 update. ZD Net explained that there was a way for iOS users to upgrade to iOS 8 even if they had insufficient available storage.

“Not every iPhone had enough free storage to download, unpack and install the new software. The workaround was for iPhone owners to use a computer with iTunes for the update and it slowed uptake for the new software.”

Apple has apparently remedied this problem with their upcoming iOS 9. With the new version of the mobile operating system, users will be given an option to remove applications temporarily while the update is being applied. The apps would then be re-downloaded after the update had taken place. The feature offers users a simple, hopefully seamless way to make enough space on their phone for updates.

MacRumors reported that the useful new feature was found by developers using the beta version of iOS 9. When a device with insufficient storage attempted an install of the operating system, a prompt appeared offering the user to make room by removing apps.

Not only has Apple made it easier to get its updates installed, they’ve also dramatically reduced the file size. iOS 8 was a whopping 4.58 gigabyte file, while the iOS 9 update is just a mere 1.3 gigabytes. Still, if your iPhone is already close to full, the new uninstall feature will be incredibly useful.

This latest feature uncovered in iOS 9 continues with the reported optimization-centered theme of the new operating system. As previously reported by the Inquisitr , this year Apple is focusing on optimization and compatibility rather than a collection of flashy new features.

“Apple’s upcoming iOS 9 will focus on improved performance and stability rather than a trove of new features, according to 9to5Mac . The new optimizations would not only benefit current devices, but extend back to older devices like the iPhone 4s and iPad Mini.”

The decision to make the newest iOS version accessible to people with little free space to spare, is sure to make many people happy.
