Donald Trump has taken some criticism in recent days over a letter to Univision. However, in a brief but vehement Facebook post, Trump has made his stance, and his priorities, clear. He’s not backing down on his letter, and he seems to be pretty confident he’s been treated unfairly.
The flap started with Trump’s contract with Univision for the Miss Universe pageants. Univision is a Spanish-language television network in America, and after Donald Trump’s presidential announcement, they canceled his contract.
Univision never stated an official reason for the cancellation, but Trump’s speech included a claim that most immigrants from Mexico are rapists, drug mules, and criminals. Obviously, Mexican immigrants make up a pretty large portion of Univision’s viewing audience, so it’s reasonable to assume that Univision felt Trump was too divisive or offensive for their network.
Trump responded with a letter, which he posted on his Facebook page .
In it, he tells Univision employees they’re banned from his Miami resort, and asks the President of Univision to act as ambassador to deliver a message to the Mexican government — that if Donald Trump becomes president, he’ll put an end to trade deals between Mexico and the U.S.
He’s been roundly criticized for the letter, which is less than diplomatic.
Now, he’s doubling down, letting the world know he was treated unfairly, and what his priority is in the matter. On Facebook, he posted the following.
“Donald J. Trump
When somebody challenges you unfairly, fight back – be brutal, be tough – don’t take it. It is always important to WIN!”
While Donald Trump may be taking the route of “be brutal, be tough” in the incident, Hillary Clinton is taking the opportunity to be friendly and welcoming. She’s posted an apology for Trump to Mexican immigrants, in Spanish.
The image essentially says that a Presidential candidate (she doesn’t mention Trump by name) called immigrants drug dealers, rapists, and criminals, and that said candidate has perhaps failed to speak to some of the hardworking immigrants who are just seeking a better life for their children.
Of course, Trump is currently in the hot seat for other reasons — he’s recently been called out for expressing that he believes in “traditional marriage,” despite being twice-divorced himself.
In this case, the never-back-down method might be more of a detriment to Trump than a boon. If his focus in “winning” is all about his contract with Univision, standing behind his biased statements may cost him more votes, as well. Donald Trump is a seasoned businessman, but failing to simply apologize for a mischaracterization may prove to be his worst business move to date.
