David Sweat Shot: New York Officials Shoot And Apprehend Escaped Prisoner Near Canadian Border [Breaking]
David Sweat has been shot by a New York State Trooper near the Canadian border and is in custody.
A spokesperson for Senator Chuck Schumer has confirmed that David Sweat was shot by police and is injured. First responders are rendering treatment to Sweat. No officers were injured during the shooting and apprehension of the escaped prisoner.
The manhunt for David Sweat led authorities to Malone, New York. Officers set up checkpoints and searched cabins in the area. Franklin County Sheriff Kevin Mulverhill was confident that the massive amount of tips that were pouring in were going to lead to David Sweat being captured. Sheriff Mulverhill was also confident that being on the run was going to cause Sweat to lose the ability to evade capture for much longer.
“It’s going to be one of those phone calls that turns this case around. Anyone in the woods and on the run from the law so to speak is not getting a full eight hours sleep, they’re not eating well and they have to keep moving. He’s fatigued, tired, and he’s going to make a mistake.”
Richard Matt escaped with David Sweat. Matt was shot and killed two days ago. During the autopsy of Richard Matt, it was discovered that he was in good health before he was shot by police. He was dressed appropriately for living in the outdoors and was able to stay well nourished while being on the run. Matt did have many insect bites and abrasions on his body that were consistent with living in the wild.
On June 6, 2015, Sweat and Matt used a variety of tools to escape from prison. It was discovered that the two escapees had help from Joyce Mitchell, an employee at the prison. A second prison employee, Gene Palmer, was also arrested in connection with aiding the two men in their escape. Palmer has been charged with tampering with evidence and promoting contraband.
The 3-week-long New York manhunt is now over. David Sweat is in custody and Richard Matt is dead. Now, focus will shift toward the two Clinton Correctional Facility employees who helped the dangerous criminals escape.
