Weekend Box Office: ‘Jurassic World’ Holds Off Strong Challengers And Hits $500 Million
The weekend box office has just about come and gone again, and once more, Jurassic World keeps sitting on top. The record-smashing film has now surpassed $500 million at the domestic box office, and it isn’t slowing down a whole lot. The weekend box office for the final days of June saw some competition, but it was able to stay on top once again.
There was some competition this weekend from Pixar’s Inside Out, but the estimated numbers for Sunday have the dinosaurs with the edge.
Once final numbers are released on Monday, it will confirm that Jurassic World has already crossed over $500 million domestically. Taking in an estimated $54.2 million over the last three days, it became the fastest movie to ever cross the $500 million mark.
The previous record was held by Marvel’s The Avengers which did it in 23 days. Jurassic World has been able to accomplish the monstrous feat in just 17 days. Add that on to another $584 million from around the world, and it’s well over $1 billion.
Two new films opened this weekend in Ted 2 and Max, but neither was a threat to the top spots. They did take three and four respectively, but Ted 2 did not come close to opening with the same fire that the original did back in 2012.
Weekend box office top 10 – June 26 to June 28, 2015 (estimated):
- Jurassic World – $54.2 million
- Inside Out – $52.128 million
- Ted 2 – $33 million
- Max – $12.2 million
- Spy – $7.8 million
- San Andreas – $5.275 million
- Dope – $2.862 million
- Insidious Chapter 3 – $2.025 million
- Mad Max: Fury Road – $1.735 million
- Avengers: Age of Ultron – $1.643 million
Avengers: Age of Ultron is currently at $1.371 million worldwide, and Jurassic World is less than $300 million from that mark. Mind you, Avengers 2 has been out for almost two full months while Jurassic World is barely over half a month in release.
Max, the story of a service dog, did rather well with $12.2 million in its opening weekend. Some expect this one to hold out a while and could get prolonged business by word of mouth.
Both San Andreas (-59 percent) and Dope (-52.3 percent) dropped off drastically from last week’s take, but still had enough to stay in the top 10.
Jurassic World has truly been a beast, but with $54 million in its second weekend, it doesn’t look as if it will surpass Avatar‘s third weekend total of $68 million. Sure, it’s possible, but not very likely.
Still, dinosaurs absolutely ruled the weekend box office and Jurassic World is not looking like it will be slowing down anytime soon. Chris Pratt obviously has another big hit on his hands, and is quickly becoming one of the most coveted actors in the world.
