‘Top Gun 2’ Rumors: Tom Cruise Returns As Maverick, ‘Top Gun 2’ Gets Green Light
Top Gun 2 rumors have been confirmed. Tom Cruise will star in Top Gun 2 as main character Maverick, as the studio has given a green light to begin pre-production. A report from Variety on Friday (June 26) revealed that Skydance CEO David Ellison is the man who has confirmed the project. It was a surprising revelation that took place during a press junket for Terminator Genisys. It probably didn’t hurt that Cruise was also attending the event when the rumors were confirmed. Ellison provided Variety a lot of information about the upcoming Top Gun sequel.
“Justin Marks is writing the screenplay right now. He has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy has turned into today. It is very much a world we live in today where it’s drone technology and fifth generation fighters … It’s really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today. There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie, and there is no Top Gun without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick.”
Top Gun 2 rumors have been floating around the industry ever since the success of the first film. It seemed like a storyline that could have easily been continued, especially with Tom Cruise in a starring role. It never happened, possibly because Cruise lacked real interest, but maybe because there also wasn’t a good script to get it off the ground. Now, David Ellison and Justin Marks may have something that will enthrall movie audiences once again.
The original Top Gun box office take was just under $177 million back in the summer of 1986. It finished as the top grossing film for the year, bringing in an additional (estimated) $177 million in overseas box office totals as well. Co-starring Kelly McGillis, Val Kilmer, Tim Robbins, Meg Ryan, and Anthony Edwards, the movie found even more success in video sales and television viewings. It has also become one of the most memorable roles that Tom Cruise has had in his many years of acting.
As previously reported by the Inquisitr, Tom Cruise will be out promoting the new Mission: Impossible film very soon. That should give Cruise an opportunity to answer questions about these Top Gun 2 rumors and just how interested he is in reprising the Maverick character. Fans have wanted to see this for years, so there is a lot that the script will have to do to make a sequel enjoyable.
