Rick Santorum Attacks Supreme Court Same-Sex Marriage Ruling: ‘It’s A Decision Based On A Lie’
Republican presidential candidate of 2014 Rick Santorum has sounded off on the Supreme Court ruling yesterday that legalized same-sex marriages across the United States. The historical ruling made waves around the world as a testament to progress and equal rights achievements, however, Santorum has stated that the decision was ultimately “based on a lie.”
Specifically, Santorum took issue with arguments heard in the Supreme Court that dubbed homophobia to be the leading cause of anti-same-sex marriage beliefs. During a speech made at the Western Conservative Summit that kicked off yesterday, Santorum stated that “the only reason you could possibly oppose changing marriage laws in America is because you hate people of the same-sex who want to marry. But that’s not true.”
“It’s a decision based on a lie. It’s a decision based on fundamental untruths, and yet it is the law of the land.”
“We are now faced not just with a society that’s going to say and is saying that marriage has nothing to do with children,” Santorum announced. “That’s the impact of this decision. Marriage has nothing to do with children.”
He continued, “Marriage has to do with adults and what makes adults happy, not what is necessary for children to be raised in a home where they have their birthright, a mother and a father who loves them and raises them into adulthood and into good citizens of America.”
Attendees of the Western Conservative Summit took the opportunity to lash out against the Supreme Court’s ruling regarding equal marriage rights as well as recent decisions made in favour of Obamacare.
Former Colorado Senator Bill Armstrong hosted the conference, and commenced the event by joking, “This is not the Supreme Court appreciation party. That’s in another room.”
Father of presidential candidate Ted Cruz took to the stage alongside many other Republican politicians, declaring the same-sex marriage laws to be not only an attack on religious freedom, but a means for the government to replace God.
“Don’t make any mistake: That decision is about religious freedom in America – but you have to understand the attack on religious freedom is not the objective. It’s only the means. You see, socialism requires that government becomes your God. And in order for government to become your God, they must destroy the concept of God.”
Former Pennsylvania senator Santorum is just one of six Republican presidential candidates gathering in Denver for the conference this weekend, preparing to make speeches to crowds of several hundred discussing the presidential race of 2016.
