‘Game of Thrones’ Author Hints [Spoiler] May Not Be Dead

The whole Game of Thrones community grieved and lamented the death of Game of Thrones character Jon Snow in the season finale of Game of Thrones season 5 and instantly, conspiracy theories were thrown into the air to create hope that one of our favorite Game of Thrones character is not gone for good.

Everyone witnessed Jon Snow getting stabbed and killed by his own brothers of the Night’s Watch in the final episode of Game of Thrones season 5, and no one could just accept that Jon Snow is really dead. George R. R. Martin, author of A Song of Ice and Fire, the book Game of Thrones is based on, hints that what the fans are seeing may actually be deceiving them.

The fifth novel in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, A Dance With Dragons, was released by Martin years back and this has laid down the story behind Game of Thrones season 5. Back in 2011, Entertainment Weekly sat down with Martin to talk about the death of Jon Snow in A Dance With Dragons, possibly inspiring his coming death in the season 5 of Game of Thrones.

When asked about the reason behind Jon Snow’s murder, Martin drops a playful response, “Oh, you think he’s dead, do you?” and adds, “Well. I’m not going to address whether he’s dead or not.”

Martin, from the start, even before Game of Thrones fans went gaga over the death of Jon Snow, was already very vague regarding the real status of Jon Snow in the upcoming installments of both Game of Thrones and A Song of Ice and Fire.

The Huffington Post also writes that, even though Jon Snow was written to look like he’s mortally wounded in the Game of Thrones book, Martin says his readers “should know better than to take anything as gospel.” This is, in fact, Game of Thrones we’re talking about after all. Not all those who seem alive are really alive and not all dead people continues to stay dead.

Christian Post also picked up a bit of word play from Martin , explaining how everyone in the Game of Thrones universe continues to grow along with the narrative.

Yes, I always had plans, what Tyrion’s arc was gonna be through this, what Arya’s arc was gonna be through this, what Jon Snow’s arc is gonna be.”

Those who read the interview immediately caught Martin’s use of a present tense when he talked about Jon Snow’s arc in Game of Thrones and although a little too forward, readers are actually hoping that this is a Freudian slip and that Jon Snow’s story really still isn’t finished.

In fact, Entertainment Weekly again talked to Martin about Jon Snow’s death in Game of Thrones recently and Martin, yet again, drops another ambiguous but hopeful response.

If there’s one thing we know in A Song of Ice and Fire is that death is not necessarily permanent.

If that’s not a huge slip straight from the writer’s mouth, then we don’t know what is. If Jon Snow was really to stay dead in Game of Thrones, then there’s no reason for Martin to keep avoiding a straight “Yes, Jon Snow is dead.”

But with the sixth installment of A Song of Ice and Fire, The Winds of Winter on the horizon, and Game of Thrones season 6 not long after that, at this point everyone can only speculate.
