Can ‘Ted 2’ Topple ‘Jurassic World’ At The Box Office?
It’s going to be another busy and successful weekend at the box office with the release of Ted 2. With both Jurassic World and Inside Out scoring well last weekend with moviegoers, there is a possibility that Ted 2 might not be able to top those films, but it could come pretty close.
According to BoxOffice.com, Ted 2 is on track to earn $54 million in its opening weekend. That estimate is the same amount the first Ted brought in during its debut weekend in 2012.
If that estimate holds up, Ted 2 would be the fifth film this year to cross the $50 million line for Universal Pictures. The studio has already seen massive success with Fifty Shades of Grey, Furious 7, Pitch Perfect 2, and Jurassic World.
But Ted 2 faces two big challengers. Jurassic World made $106.5 million in its second weekend of release to reclaim the top spot, while Pixar’s Inside Out brought in $90.4 million in its debut weekend, according to Box Office Mojo. Both films were well-received by moviegoers and are expected to have continued success at the box office.
While Ted 2 is looking to have a big opening, Jurassic World and Inside Out are both also expected to bring in more than $50 million. As of right now, analysts are predicting that Jurassic World will hang onto the top spot for a third week. Inside Out will likely stay at the No. 2 spot, but Ted 2 could come in and edge out the family-friendly film, knocking it to third place. It’s either that, or Ted 2 will take third and Inside Out will hang onto the No. 2 spot. No matter the outcome, BoxOffice.com’s Phil Contrino told Variety that Hollywood is looking to have another successful weekend.
“The top three could be any combination. It’s going to be a massive weekend overall.”
While Ted 2 sees the reunion of Mark Wahlberg and Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane, the film faces even more challenges than just strong box office competition. Unlike Jurassic World and Inside Out, Ted 2 is receiving mostly negative reviews from critics. At the time of this publication, the R-rated comedy is at 43 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, with 20 of the 47 reviews counted as positive.
Writing for RogerEbert.com, Glenn Kenny said the sequel’s humor pales when compared to the first film.
“While the first film offered, by my casual recollection, almost two dozen belly laughs, this one barely registers four.”
Drew Taylor of the Playlist noted that Ted 2 will likely be a box office success, but its director needs to improve if he wants to continue to attract moviegoers.
“Ted 2 might be enough of a financial success to put MacFarlane back on top, but creatively, he’s still bankrupt.”
BoxOffice.com reports that while the first Ted was a massive success, MacFarlane’s previous film, A Million Ways to Die in the West, flopped at the box office. The Ted fans might still show up for Ted 2, but the amount of time between the films may have been “too long” of a wait.
“Although well-received at the time, the first film’s popularity has tapered off a bit over the past three years.”
