Ryan Gosling Clucks At Costco For Animal Cruelty, Free The Chickens

Ryan Gosling is flapping mad at Costco and he’s not afraid to cluck about it.

The heartthrob-turned-animal-activist penned an open letter to Costco condemning them for selling eggs from a supplier that mistreats its chickens.

In 2007, Costco made a public promise to start selling only cage-free eggs.

Then, mere days ago, a Humane Society of America undercover investigation revealed one of Costco’s major egg suppliers violated standards of animal decency and mistreated its chickens.

Gosling was incensed by the video showing that the chickens only had as much space as an iPad to live in, and penned an open letter to Costco CEO Craig Jelinek.

[I]t’s appalling that Costco has been selling these eggs with deceptive labeling on cartons featuring graphics of birds living out in a green pasture. You’re already eliminating cages for veal calves and pigs – don’t you feel that chickens also deserve the same mercy?

Gosling isn’t alone. Since the video’s release, it has garnered more than 200,000 views, and 10,000 people have written Costco demanding the company change its suppliers, according to Time.

Ryan’s letter says Costco is lying to its customers with misleading advertising showing chickens living in green pastures while, in reality, they’re confined to filth laden cages and made to live next to dead cage mates.

Costco previously defended its supplier, saying the company is behaving appropriately.

This isn’t the first time the Notebook actor has come out in defense of chickens.

Gosling has written two letters to Yum! Brands complaining of the way KFC chickens were housed, raised and slaughtered; in 2003, and again in 2008.

The letters accused KFC suppliers of allowing their birds to have their wings broken by uncaring workers.

Then, in 2011, Gosling wrote to the USDA endorsing “whole house gassing,” which renders chickens unconscious before they’re killed.

Also in 2011, Ryan joined actress Zooey Deschanel in urging McDonalds to only buy eggs from cage-free suppliers.

The actor from Crazy Stupid Love isn’t a vegan, however. He owns part of a restaurant that serves chicken and is also on record saying he ate a lot of chicken to bulk up.

Eva Mendes & Ryan Gosling

Aside from crusading to save the living condition of chickens everywhere, Ryan has also been in the news lately, along with Eva Mendes.

The super private couple and their baby, Esmeralda, are the focus of public attention whenever they venture out, mainly because they’re so private.

If you want to support Ryan’s cause then cluck, cluck away.
