‘True Detective’ Season 2: What We Know And What’s To Come For Vince Vaughn And Colin Farrell [Episode 2 Preview]
Season 2 of True Detective is underway, and features a number of new and fascinating characters. What can these new characters tell us about what’s ahead in the new season?
In the first episode of the new season, titled “The Western Book of the Dead,” four new characters were introduced. All of the character’s backstories were expanded on in the episode, and each one of them offers a glimpse at what is in store in the coming installments.
One new character in the crime drama is Ray, played by Colin Farrell. Ray is a detective in Vinci who answers to the mobster Frank Semyon, played by Vince Vaughn. Ray is prone to heavy drinking, passing out in public places, and getting into a fair share of bar brawls.
Although True Detective seems to want fans to have a little sympathy for Ray, his behavior in the first episode doesn’t help his case. Additionally, his ties with Frank, coupled with his reckless behavior, makes him a character to watch out for as the season progresses.
As far as Frank is concerned, the episode went a long way in setting him up as having the ideal life. Despite his criminal background, Frank seemingly has everything going for him. He has a nice house, a loyal wife — played by Kelly Reilly — and is about to venture into the legitimate business world. However, when Ray asks him about the disappearance of Ben Caspar, a city manager, Frank seems to be hiding something.
Meanwhile, the second detective we are introduced to is Antigone, who goes by Ani and is played by Rachel McAdams. Ani’s life is far from perfect, and her name is likely a reference to the Greek figure who sacrifices herself to protect a family member. While Ani’s life certainly is a reflection of a Greek tragedy, she does manage to function well and is in a relationship with her partner, Paul.
At the same time, Paul, who is played by Taylor Kitsch, is part of the California Highway Patrol and was put on leave after a woman accused him of sexual advances after he pulled her over. To further complicate his life, he is the one who discovers the body of the missing city manager, who had his eyes burned out with acid.
With the stage being set in the first episode, the next installment, titled “Night Finds You,” will continue to explore the details behind Caspar’s death. According to Fashion & Style, the episode will reveal that prostitutes played a role in the man’s death while Frank searches for his missing fortune.
True Detective airs Sunday nights on HBO.
