Who Is Martin Henderson, And What Role Will He Play On ‘Grey’s Anatomy?’

Grey’s Anatomy fans are still reeling from the death of Dr. Derek Shepherd (aka McDreamy), but for Season 12, life must go on. Enter actor Martin Henderson, who has been cast as a surgeon by creator Shonda Rhimes. It is not known if he will be Meredith Grey’s new love interest, but according to Hollywood Life, Henderson will do more than “fill the gaping hole.”

But who is Martin Henderson? Where did he come from, and can he fill the shoes left empty by Dr. Derek Shepherd? Will he be able to hold his own with the cast of Grey’s Anatomy? Shonda Rhimes thinks so. Henderson is from New Zealand, and it took him more than a year to get his break in Los Angeles, despite acting credentials going back to his childhood back home. Before being cast on Grey’s Anatomy, Henderson worked with Shonda Rhimes before on her short-lived show Off the Map, where he played, you guessed it, a doctor.

Rhimes continues to tease in the press about what’s coming, and how Henderson will fit into the tightly-knit cast. To some, including Rhimes, Grey’s Anatomy is not Grey’s Anatomy without McDreamy.

“Derek Shepherd is and will always be an incredibly important character — for Meredith, for me and for the fans. I absolutely never imagined saying goodbye to our ‘McDreamy,’ ” Grey’s Anatomy show creator Shonda Rhimes said in a statement.

Henderson will be dropped into the steaming cauldron that is Grey’s Anatomy and Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital. Presumably, a wedding is in the works for Jo and Alex, who have also decided to find a home for just the two of them. Amelia and Owen have broken up, but then again, after Derek’s death, there were still sparks. Callie has started dating, and Arizona seems to be adjusting to the separation.

Also added to the full-time cast will be Dr. Miranda Bailey’s husband, Ben, played by actor Jason George. ABC president Paul Lee has tried to reassure fans that Season 12 will “absolutely not” be the last season of Grey’s Anatomy. The show might continue, but it’s a contract renewal year for many of the key players, including the Grey’s Anatomy lead, Meredith Grey, played by Ellen Pompeo. For now, Rhimes is very tight-lipped about the events for Season 12. She has withdrawn from all social media as to not tip off any of her fans.
