Game of Thrones Death Confirmed As Season 6 Leaks Begin [Spoilers]
This article contains spoilers about seasons 5 and 6 of Game of Thrones.
Fans of the hit HBO series Game of Thrones have only had a week to mourn the passing of Jon Snow. Despite the denials and theories about his possible resurrection, there are signs that Game of Thrones fans may be ready to accept Jon’s death. An Entertainment Weekly poll revealed that fans consider Jon Snow’s death to be the most tragic in the entire series. Jon’s death beat the infamous Red Wedding by more than one thousand votes, and the death of Ned Stark by more than four thousand votes. By contrast, the death of Robert Baratheron garnered a mere 145 votes. The deaths of Shireen Baratheon and Oberyn Martell rounded out the top 5.
Still, not all fans are ready to let go of Jon Snow. The most recent fan theory to emerge concerns a change in Jon’s color just before the credits rolled on the Season 5 finale, “Mother’s Mercy.”
Sharp eyed viewers may have noticed that as the camera hovered over Jon Snow’s lifeless body, the color of his eyes changed from their normal brown to a lighter bluish color. If you didn’t, MTV News provided screenshots in a recent article. There’s no way of knowing if the color change is a trick of the light, a post production error, or intentional. If the color change was intentional, there’s no way of knowing what it means for the story. If nothing else, it means that speculation will continue at least until Season 6.
The fate of another major character, Stannis Baratheon, was also left slightly ambiguous. Normally, Game of Thrones directors take care to show proof that characters are dead. There was the lingering shot of Jon Snow’s body. The killing blows of Ned Stark, Catelyn Stark, Renly Baratheon, Tywin Lannister, and just about every other character have been aired in gory detail. The death of Stannis Baratheon, however, was not exactly shown. This led some fans to conclude that the “One True King” of Westeros might be alive. Of course, director David Nutter confirmed Stannis’ demise, but he also swears Jon Snow is dead.
Unfortunately, a recent casting leak knocks back that theory. According to Winteriscoming.net, video of auditions for a Season 6 role were leaked briefly earlier this week. In the scene, which is only described as the videos were quickly deleted, shows Tehmina Sunny auditioning for the role of a Red Priestess of R’hllor. According to transcripts, the priestess meets with Tyrion and Varys, offering help from her High Priest to Daenerys. Apparently, the order believes that Daenerys is the true promise of the Lord of Light.
Varys points out that Melisandre had said the same of Stannis Baratheon, who is now dead. Of course, given that the new season of Game of Thrones usually picks up just after the previous season, there’s no explanation how Varys and Tyrion know that Stannis is dead.
For now at least, all this does is confirm that Stannis Baratheon, first of his name, his dead.
