Seattle Mariners Trade Rumors: Ben Revere May Become Leadoff Hitting Answer For Mariners
Seattle Mariners trade rumors have the team watching Ben Revere very closely. Revere could be a leadoff hitter for the Mariners and would fit nicely in left field if the team ended up making a move. Revere is with the Philadelphia Phillies, and a report from CSN Philly on Thursday (June 11) had a Mariners representative in Cincinnati to watch him play. It certainly indicates that the team has continued interest, especially since this news comes after they acquired Mark Trumbo from the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Revere is the odd man out in Philadelphia as the team tries to build for the future. He makes $4.1 million in the 2015 MLB season, and has another arbitration year in 2016. It means a team wouldn’t just be acquiring him for the rest of the current season. The team control will come at a price, though, as Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. isn’t just going to give him away. The Mariners do have some depth in the Minor League system to offer an interesting package if team general manager Jack Zduriencik wanted to. Finding a replacement for Austin Jackson at the top of the order could make a move worth it.
For the 2015 MLB season, Ben Revere has a.270 batting average (63-for-233) with 14 extra base hits and 12 stolen bases. In 2014, he finished the season with a.306 batting average and 49 stolen bases to his credit. The strengths that Revere brings to the table include above average defense in the outfield (he can play all three positions) and a lot of speed on the base paths. His batting average typically hovers around.300 as well, showing he is putting the ball in play with a lot of consistency.
The Mariners have a lot of problems on offense, and adding a leadoff hitter that can improve the defense and distract the starting pitcher could help a lot. One thing Revere does not do is get a lot of extra base hits, and he doesn’t walk very often, either. If the Mariners were to trade for him, he would likely set the table more often than Austin Jackson or Dustin Ackley have done, but he also won’t solve every issue that has plagued the team during the 2015 MLB season.
As previously reported on the Inquisitr, the Philadelphia Phillies are looking to make a lot of deals before the deadline. That could include trading pitchers Cole Hamels and Jonathan Papelbon, so the Mariners would need to act quickly before Revere ends up as a throw-in during one of those deals. While these Seattle Mariners trade rumors don’t offer an answer to everything the team needs to fix, Revere is better than the current options on the 25-man roster. If Zduriencik can pull off a trade that doesn’t cost many assets, it’s a move he has to seriously consider making.
