‘Friends’ TV Show: Monica Was Never Supposed to Marry Chandler
Friends may have finished more than ten years ago, but it is still very much a part of our cultural identity today.
Marta Kauffman, the co-creator of Friends, recently released some news that had Friends fans reeling.
As it turns out, the characters of Chandler and Monica were never intended to get married. The intention of the co-creator’s was for Chandler and Monica to have a quick fling, paving the way for jokes and awkward situations, Australian radio station 92.9 recently reported.
However, the first scene revealing the Friends fling in Season 4 brought such a reaction from the audience that the co-creators had to rethink their intentions for the storyline, Marta Kauffman explained.
“We had no idea what response [the fling] was going to get. We had to stop [filming] the show because people were screaming… We thought it was going to be funny and we were going to get rid of it. Suddenly the audience told us they had been waiting for [Chandler and Monica to get together] and we had to rethink how we were going to keep going and change the relationship.”

And as Cosmopolitan reminded us, Marta Kauffman previously said that the overriding Friends love story was never intended to be Ross and Rachel, or even Chandler and Monica – Friends was originally supposed to be a love story about Monica and Joey.
“They just seemed the most sexual of the characters.”
Without Chandler and Monica, Friends fans would never have been able to react to the many epic Chandler and Monica moments throughout the show.

Even if you are the ultimate Chandler and Monica Friends fan, is there just a little part of you that would love to see what it would have looked like if Monica had found Joey in that London hotel room instead of Chandler? Or maybe you would have preferred to have seen Joey and Phoebe get together instead? There certainly were enough hints throughout the ten seasons of Friends that we had a Joey/Phoebe pairing to look forward to at the end.
