Laura Prepon Talks Alex Vause In Season Three Of ‘Orange Is The New Black’
Laura Prepon is opening up about her character Alex Vause in the third season of Orange is the New Black.
During season 2 of Netflix’s hit series, Alex takes a plea deal that gets her out of the walls of Litchfield, leaving her MIA for most of the season. However, she soon returned and we got to see more of Alex and Piper’s (played by Taylor Schilling) on-again, off-again relationship. Laura promises to appear in all of the episodes of the upcoming season, and this time around, she describes her character as “broken.”
“She basically doesn’t know how she got back into prison, she feels like an idiot that she has freedom again, and she doesn’t know how she got back in there and it’s a situation. But it’s great, you see all these sides to her that you haven’t necessarily seen before,” the former That ’70s Show star said, according to the Star.
“She loves being in power, she is very smart and wily, and she’s just this incredible chick, but she doesn’t really let people see, she doesn’t (normally) wear her heart on her sleeve,” Prepon added.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Alex and Piper have a major test in their relationship early on in the season when Alex finds out that Piper was the reason she was sent back to Litchfield.
“That’s the thing that’s so great about their relationship. It’s tumultuous and manipulative, but they love each other,” Prepon explained. “Whenever either of them does these things to the other, I don’t want to say they do it out of love, but it’s grounded in this authentic love for each other. They both look for themselves at times, but it’s like two magnets. They can’t not be with each other.”

Their relationship is tested again midway through the season when a new inmate named Stella (Ruby Rose) has her eye on Piper.
“Alex basically is like, ‘Who is this Justin Bieber person?’ ” Prepon said, trying not to reveal too much. “So she has a very funny take on Stella. By the way, Ruby Rose is absolutely gorgeous — that is what my character calls her. It’s interesting — you have to have some kind of love triangle. Larry’s gone, so they brought in [Stella], and it’s great. She does shake things up. I can’t give too much away, but it’s fun.”
