Minecraft Creator’s Next Game Is 0x10c
After handing over the Minecraft reigns back in December last year, indie superstar Markus “Notch” Persson has since started development on an entirely new game. Now we know a little more about the game, including its name: 0x10c.
Clearly, 0x10c isn’t exactly the easiest video game title to pronounce–in fact, it’s easily harder to pronounce than anything Square Enix could possibly cook up, and I’d say that’s quite an accomplishment. But, as Notch explained on Twitter, that’s by design.
“The real name has the “c” raised above the other letters. I won’t tell you how to pronounce it yet. It’s a riddle,” Notch wrote in a tweet.
So what is the impossible-to-pronounce game actually about? According to 0x10c’s official website, the game will take place in space, with players traversing the universe in their very own spaceship. The developers describe the project as “ambitious”, and, going by what we know about the game, I’d be inclined to agree.
In 0x10c, players’ ships will be run by a fully-emulated 16-bit CPU powered by a generator with fixed wattage. In order to perform some of the ship’s functions and conserve power, for example, one might be required to disable other systems–micromanaging your ship’s systems will play a big part in the overall gameplay system.
“Each ship has a generator capable of producing a fixed wattage, and everything you connect to it drains wattage. A cloaking field, for example, might require almost all the power from the generator, forcing you to turn off all computers and dim all lights in order to successfully cloak.,” Mojang’s description on the game’s website explains.
There’s no word on 0x10c’s pricing just yet, but it sounds like Notch is considering charging a monthly fee of some sort because, as he explains, “we are going to emulate all computers and physics even when players aren’t logged in.”
The game is said to be very early on in development, and as such there’s no screenshots or videos currently available. Consider me interested, Notch.
