Leonard Nimoy Documentary ‘For The Love Of Spock’ Needs You
The son of Leonard Nimoy, Adam Nimoy, has just launched a Kickstarter campaign to bring to life the documentary he says the senior Nimoy had hoped to bring to fruition before his passing. The documentary, For the Love of Spock, is based on Leonard’s life and his portrayal of Star Trek‘s most famous science officer.
Adam Nimoy designed the campaign in the hopes that he can raise the necessary $600,000 to fund For the Love of Spock, which was “a project that was important to my dad and has become extremely important to me.”
The concept was an original idea that Leonard and the younger Nimoy had developed together, hoping to commemorate Star Trek in their own way, while also giving Star Trek fans a deeper look into Mr. Nimoy’s experiences playing the Vulcan first officer, Mr. Spock.
“Last year, my father and I began working on a documentary about the life of Mr. Spock,” says Adam Nimoy. “We were both very much aware that the 50th anniversary of Star Trek the original series was coming up in 2016 and we wanted to create something to commemorate that event, a documentary based primarily on Mr. Spock had never been done before, and we both felt strongly about paying tribute to the half-human, half-Vulcan first officer of the Starship Enterprise.”
Due to the loss of Leonard Nimoy in February, Adam’s dream of working on the project together with his father is no longer possible, but others have stepped up to contribute their resources and expertise toward completing Leonard Nimoy’s final opus. Among those pitching in to help Adam Nimoy complete the documentary is Zachary Quinto, popular among Star Trek fans for playing Mr. Spock in the rebooted Star Trek films, who has volunteered to narrate the film.
The initial intent was to create an objective look into Leonard Nimoy’s life and the ways in which the character of Mr. Spock affected both Leonard and those in his family. However, since the passing, Adam has found a growing interest in seeing a personal touch added to the feature-length documentary.
“Although I had initially intended to take a somewhat detached, objective view of the subject matter, more and more people involved in this film have urged me to interject some of my own perspective on what it was like growing up with Mr. Spock in the house, and how Dad’s new-found celebrity and meteoric career affected my life.”
The Kickstarter campaign for For the Love of Spock will run until July 1 and, as is the case with any fundraiser posted on the site, contributions earn rewards. The rewards vary according to the size of the pledge, with a $5 pledge earning the contributor a heartfelt thank you and a $15 pledge earning a PDF bundle of Spock collectibles (articles, photographs, interviews, etc). The $10,000 pledge earns contributors associate producer credit on the film.
