Pope Francis Is Like ‘Breaking Bad’s’ Drug Kingpin Walter White, Says HBO’s John Oliver
Pope Francis is like Walter White of the TV show Breaking Bad, according to John Oliver, host of HBO’s Last Week Tonight. He blasted the Vatican for calling Ireland’s historic vote to legalize same-sex marriage a “defeat for humanity.” Oliver rebuked the Catholic Church by saying,”Remember, you’re an organization whose victories for humanity include the Crusades, forced adoptions, and running a widely-successful international pedophile exchange program.”
Oliver later likened Pope Francis to Breaking Bad’s lead character on the TV show, drug kingpin Walter White. John also pointed out the fact that the Pope hasn’t watched TV in 25 years. He recommended Breaking Bad since he believes Pope Francis’ attitude is similar to the character.
The HBO host then played a clip from al Jazeera that quoted the Pope’s criticism, which called gay marriage a “defeat for humanity.” Oliver continued to react to that clip by saying, “Let’s save the defeat for humanity accusation for things that truly deserve it.” He then brought to the lime light a TV advertisement for a device that makes food bowls out of bacon.
These comparisons of Pope Francis and Walter White are not the only thing upsetting Catholics in recent times. According to News Buster, during the Critics’ Choice Television Awards on A&E, Charlize Theron said of Seth McFarland, “By the age of 9, he was drawing a comic strip for the local paper. One features a character taking Communion and asking, ‘Can I have fries with that?’ He got an angry letter from the local priest, and he knew the path he would take. He and that priest spent the next three years in a loving monogamous relationships.”
The Catholic League’s Bill Donohue was not very happy at all and responded to both John Oliver and Charlize Theron in a Monday press release.
“Many celebrities will do anything to show how utterly welcoming they are of men and women who are in rebellion against their own nature—they applaud every time someone gets Jennerized. But when it comes to Catholics, that’s a different story. Indeed, they are obliged to be bigoted.”
Donohue continued by saying that, “Smearing the Catholic Church—or any other religious institution—is always wrong, and it is particularly despicable when the smears are based on ignorance and lies.”
What do you think about how John Oliver compared Pope Francis to the main Breaking Bad character?
