New Role For Williams? Brian Williams’ NBC Role

Brian Williams’ NBC role might be different from the anchor job he had before his six-month suspension. According to the Huffington Post, there might be a new role for Williams.

CNN reported that Brian Williams’ NBC role may be a new one if he returns. CNN’s Brian Stelter says the network is looking to keep Williams on in a new role.

“My sources are pointing to a new role for Williams — not necessarily at ‘Nightly News,’ but somewhere else at NBC. NBC News’ new chairman, Andy Lack, is said to be advocating for this option, but this new role would keep Williams in the fold.”

Stelter was quick to explain that this proposal would presumably keep Lester Holt, who has been filling Williams’ seat on a temporary basis, in the NBC Nightly News anchor chair. Holt, who is popular among NBC staff, has managed to keep the program’s ratings stable despite the scandal.

Vanity Fair correspondent Bryan Burrough commented on Williams’ NBC role.

“There’s not a lot of support for having Brian come back, and there is a lot of support for Lester Holt, who remains terribly popular with NBC and whose ratings are holding up. Lester Holt is no one’s idea of a buzzy star, but he’s a workman-like professional, [a] popular newsman who brings the credibility to that news desk that NBC badly needs.”

Sources with direct knowledge of the situation say executives at the network are looking for a way to keep Brian Williams employed. However, negotiations are still going on between Williams and the network.

Last February, Williams was suspended for six months after an internal investigation was conducted about Williams exaggerating stories more than once about being in a helicopter in Iraq in 2003, among other issues.

Even though the anchor gave an apology on the air after several soldiers came forward to contradict his account of an Iraq War mission, the network still suspended him. His suspension is expected to be over by the end of the summer.

It is not certain whether Brian Williams’ NBC role as an anchor is completely over. It does look like he might return to NBC in a new and different role. What the role is, nobody is saying right now.

Even though Brian Williams might be offered a new role at NBC, it’s a possibility he might not even want to return.
