The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe airs on the Lifetime network on Saturday, May 30 and Sunday, May 31. The series is a chronicle of Marilyn Monroe’s life and how she succeeded in hiding her most intimate secrets from those who thought they knew her. The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe is a 2015 American made-for-television drama film starring Kelli Garner as Norma Jeane Mortenson who the world knows as Marilyn Monroe, who died on August 5, 1962, at the age of 36.
IMDb reports that alongside Garner, others stars include Susan Sarandon, Emma Watts, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Through Garner’s performance, viewers will find out about the dark side of Monroe and many of the secrets she kept.
Susan Sarandon plays Marilyn’s mother, Gladys, and she is the biggest secret of all. Gladys was institutionalized for mental illness. It is so interesting that Sarandon’s daughter, Eva Amurri Martino, plays Gladys in her youth. Jeffrey Dean Morgan plays Joe DiMaggio, the second of Monroe’s three husbands.
The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe begins with a portrait of a young Norma Jeane Mortenson as she battles a lonely and loveless existence with an absent mother. She spent most of her childhood in foster homes. Norma Jeane blossoms into an ambitious woman after she reinvents herself to become the symbol of an era.
Marilyn was an actress, model, and singer, who became a major sex symbol, starring in a number of commercially successful motion pictures during the 1950s and early 1960s.
“In spite of Marilyn Monroe’s beauty and fame, she had a turbulent personal life.”
Marilyn loved being a star, but she was desperate for the approval and protection of men. The outside world never truly saw or understood the real Marilyn. She was a woman so different from her public persona.
Underneath her fame, she longed for much more. All three of her marriages failed. Monroe married James Dougherty when she was 16, and he was 21. They divorced after he left her home alone and bored when he became a Marine. Her second marriage to Joe DiMaggio, a retired baseball star with the New York Yankees, was full of arguments related to mental cruelty, jealousy, and fame. That marriage was dissolved in the same year.
“He was jealous of me because I was more famous than he was. That is what ended our marriage.”
Monroe’s last marriage was to playwright and screenwriter Arthur Miller, who would later write two of her films’ screenplays.
The viewers of The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe will get to know her as never before. Then, they will understand some of the things they have heard in the news about her.
