‘The Originals’ Star Daniel Gillies Teases Season 3 Spoilers
Warning: This article contains spoilers for The Originals.
Essentially, The Originals is the tale of an aristocratic family with the Mikaelsons at times resembling the patriarchal families of old prime time serials like Dallas and Dynasty. There is one difference. This family, ruled most times by Klaus Mikaelson (Joseph Morgan) and his unyielding, paranoid manner, is immortal. For that reason, grudges carry an everlasting effect, even within the limited scope of The Originals.
Speaking of grudges, Daniel Gillies reminds us that The Originals left off with bitter feelings driving a wedge between brothers Klaus and Elijah. It seems the summer break is only making matters worse and, when The Originals does resume, fans will find that the hostility between those Mikaelson brothers has only grown hotter. In fact, Gillies suggests that their feud will spill out into The Originals‘ New Orleans streets.
“I think the rift between them is going to precipitate the chain of events,” Daniel Gillies, who plays original vampire Elijah Mikaelson, said. “It’s not just a begrudging alliance now — it’s an alliance on its last thread of trust.”
When The Originals left off, Klaus had just finished telling his daughter the story of the lone Wolf King, only to find that Elijah had returned into the fold. Of course, we know Elijah returned only for the sake of infant Hope and only at the behest of Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin). This doesn’t mean Elijah will ever find it in his heart to offer forgiveness to his brother, but who’s to say. As Gillies points out, The Originals is at the whim of the writers and they only take the show one season at a time, as opposed to The Vampire Diaries, which has had a series of books to draw from, particularly in the earlier seasons.
“I think there’s no way to determine how to strategize taking a show from A to Z on network television,” Gillies says. “I think that the HBOs of the world, the AMCs … like, I do believe Breaking Bad was an arc that they foresaw and that they fulfilled, but I just think that with us there’s just no way. There’s just too many variables.”
Meanwhile, The Originals executive producer Michael Narducci reports that a new threat will force the Mikaelson brothers to come together to form a unified front at least in opposition to outside enemies.
“The spirits are going to have access to Davina,” the EP for The Originals said. “They’re going to lend her their power and communicate with her about what’s best for the people and witches of New Orleans. That’s who she’ll be an advocate for, and the Mikaelsons, some would argue, are not the best things in the world for the witches. That’s going to put them at odds, assuming there’s no larger threat coming for which they might have to unite against. There are a lot of different ways this could play out.”
The Originals season premiere will air in October on the CW network.
