Herd Rescues Baby Elephant: Big Elephant Herd Helps Fallen Calf In Middle Of Busy Road
A herd rescued a baby elephant that laid down in the middle of a busy road. After the young animal decided to hang out amongst busy traffic, the rest of the herd wasn’t leaving it behind.
According to Grind TV, the incident recently happened at Kruger National Park in South Africa. Drivers stopped and watched the scene unfold as the baby elephant laid down for some unknown reason.
The video was posted on YouTube. At first, the baby elephant willingly kneels down in the middle of the South African road before completely laying down on its side. Soon, one of the big elephants goes over and attempts to nudge the calf up, but it wasn’t moving. He didn’t appear injured or suffering from any discomfort — he just seemed stubborn about moving on with the rest of the herd.
In the end, one of the young adult elephants and another calf was able to make some headway. The herd rescued the baby elephant from potentially being hurt on the road after it decided to get up and walk on with the rest of them. Motorists were good giving the animals plenty of room to get things under control themselves.
It’s not apparent what caused the baby elephant to lie down, but a commenter on Kruger’s website thinks it was just tired and didn’t fall down. Another commenter explained that it could have been a tantrum, like human babies throw.
Elephants are incredibly smart animals that have amazing communication skills. Research has shown that their emotions are eerily similar to those of human beings. Maybe the baby elephant was being stubborn and letting the rest of the herd know how it felt.
In this instance, it’s obvious that the elephant herd didn’t want one of its members getting stuck behind or being in an unsafe place. The herd appeared to understand that this wasn’t the best place for a calf to remain.
The Inquisitr wrote on a similar incident, in which a baby elephant was rescued by another herd. A calf was saved by other elephants after her mother was killed with poisoned spears by poachers who wanted her tusks. A group of elephants adopted the 10-month-old after she suffered a traumatic loss and heavily mourned her mother. After she gained a little more trust of the others, she accepted them fully and was able to recover.
