Famed as an actress at 37, Maggie Gyllenhaal recently was told she is too old to play the part of a lover to a 55-year-old male star. And now, just like Emma Watson, Gyllenhaal is charging that Hollywood is guilty of ageism and sexism , reported The Wrap .
Discussing her career, Maggie reflected on the highs of lows of being an actress in the entertainment world. It was then that she revealed the situation in which she felt that Hollywood discriminates against women.
“There are things that are really disappointing about being an actress in Hollywood that surprise me all the time. I’m 37 and I was told recently I was too old to play the lover of a man who was 55. It was astonishing to me. It made me feel bad, and then it made me feel angry, and then it made me laugh.”
And Gyllenhaal isn’t alone in contending that the entertainment industry is sexist.
Known for playing Hermione in Harry Potter , Emma Watson has been speaking out against gender bias recently.
In particular, Watson also charged that Hollywood discriminates against women, reported the Telegraph .
Now, the UN Women Goodwill Ambassador as well as an actress,Watson has kick-started the HeForShe campaign to help stop gender inequality.
“We want to end gender inequality—and to do that we need everyone to be involved,” she said. “We don’t just want to talk about it, but make sure it is tangible.”
And Emma revealed that she feels she has been discriminated against because of her gender since she was 8-years-old.
“I started questioning gender-based assumptions when at eight I was confused at being called ‘bossy,’ because I wanted to direct the plays we would put on for our parents—but the boys were not. When at 14 I started being sexualised by certain elements of the press. When at 15 my girlfriends started dropping out of their sports teams because they didn’t want to appear ‘muscly.’”
As the Inquisitr reported, Watson is determined to make the HeForShe campaign succeed while also changing the course of her career. The HeForShe solidarity movement’s goal focuses on getting 100,000 men and boys involved in the fight to achieve gender equality.
Emma has shifted to more adult films since her Harry Potter days and also is involved in yoga to maintain her physical health and emotional well-being. And, holding true to her character of Hermione at Hogwarts, she earned a bachelor’s degree in English literature.
