Netflix Best Movie And TV Show Picks For June: Must-See Streaming Selections To Kick Off Summer
The popular Netflix streaming service, as usual, will add several dozen new movies and TV shows to its menu in June. In fact, with summer about to get started, Netflix has put together a particularly impressive set of new offerings for the month. Because viewers can sometimes have a difficult time finding the good stuff buried among the new Netflix offerings, what follows is a list of must-see movie and TV show picks.
For a full list of all new Netflix June movies and TV shows, visit this link. Note that the remaining days of May are your last chance, at least for now, to catch classics such as Taxi Driver, Steel Magnolias, Silence of the Lambs and Rain Man, among others.
But 58 new titles will come onto Netflix to replace the 55 outgoing offerings, and here are some of the best and most interesting selections from the new stuff in June.
SENSE8 (June 5)
Though it arrives with somewhat less hype than such other Netflix original series as Daredevil or Orange Is The New Black, this 12-episode, sophisticated science-fiction saga come with some serious talent behind it. The series was created by Andy and Lana Wachowski, best known for The Matrix trilogy as well as the graphic novel adaptation V For Vendetta. The Wachowskis, however, collaborated with J. Michael Straczynski, writer/producer of the cult-favorite sci-fi series Babylon 5.

A MOST WANTED MAN (June 19)
One of last year’s finest, but most overlooked films, this gripping thriller about a German intelligence officer attempting outwit a terrorist group, only to face resistance from within his own government, features the final starring role for the late Philip Seymour Hoffman — who turns in one of his greatest performances — and is based on a novel by the acknowledged master of the espionage genre, John Le Carre.
GRACE OF MONACO (June 8)
The story behind this biopic of Grace Kelly, the Hollywood star — she was favorite leading lady of Alfred Hitchcock — who married into royalty is perhaps more interesting than the film itself. Selected to open the 2014 Cannes Film Festival and starring Nicole Kidman as Princess Grace, the film fell victim to Hollywood behind-the-scenes infighting and ended up never making it into theaters. Instead, Grace of Monaco had its premiere as a cable movie for the Lifetime network. Now, it’s on Netflix.
NIGHTCRAWLER (June 10)
Jake Gyllenhall received plenty of Oscar buzz, but ultimately not a nomination, for his disturbing and mesmerizing role as a sociopathic con artist who finds his calling as a freelance news cameraman capitalizing on tragedy to sell his footage to local news broadcasts. The intended exposé of the inner workings of TV news is interesting, but less so than Gyllenhall’s memorably intense turn as a man capable of, it seems, just about anything to get ahead.
ROSEWATER (June 10)
If you’re wondering what Jon Stewart will do with himself when he leaves his Daily Show job later this year, Rosewater will give you a sneak preview. Stewart’s debut as a film director takes on the Iranian pro-democracy movement and is far from the hilarity he offers up on his Comedy Central “fake news” program.
Some honorable mentions well worth checking out on Netflix in June include Orange Is The New Black Season 3 (June 12); the Martin Scorsese/Leonardo DiCaprio biopic of crazed billionaire Howard Hughes, The Aviator (June 1); the historical race relations drama The Butler (June 16); and Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer, the HBO documentary about the all-female Russian punk rock band and political dissidents known as Pussy Riot (June 15).
