TNA News: What Is Leading To Destination America Cancelling ‘Impact Wrestling,’ TNA Asking For More Money?
It has been claimed by reliable sources that TNA’s Impact Wrestling television show has been cancelled by Destination America. While some who work with TNA refute the claim, the network has not truly given a yes or no answer on the subject. In fact, check out their press release on the news report going around.
They claim, “It has come to our attention that several internet news sources have falsely attributed statements to TNA, its executives and broadcasting partner. These false statements constitute defamation and if necessary we will seek all legal remedies available to us.”
The Wrestling Observer reported that TNA was going to have their show cancelled around the third quarter of the year, which is around September. Like Spike TV, Destination America was planning on keeping the cancellation private until they announced their new season line-up. However, news got out and we knew of the cancellation far before it was planned for us to know.
TNA is doing their best to refute claims without actually refuting them, and they never said the story on their cancellation wasn’t true. They talk up issues with executives and things of that nature when, in fact, the WON report was quite positive on the executives, including new addition Billy Corgan. Corgan actually called out lead WON writer Dave Meltzer, who was quick to point out how it seems Billy didn’t read his report at all. Dave also mentions that Corgan is doing the exact thing Vince Russo did last year in denial claims (which is now bringing Russo out of the woodwork). The fact is that Spike TV was cutting TNA, and now there is another fact that TNA can’t confirm despite having plenty of opportunities to do so.
So what led to the cancellation of Impact Wrestling? Why would Destination America cut their highest-rated program?
There are plenty of reasons, first and foremost of which is the cost of keeping TNA on the air. It seems that Destination America is paying out more than they make back. This may also be due to regular Destination America advertisers telling the company that they do not want to have material shown during TNA broadcasts.
According to Cageside Seats, TNA approached Destination America for a great deal of things. They asked for the show to be moved to Wednesday nights, as well as production subsidy and help with some talent contracts. Destination America granted them the move to Wednesday night, but nothing more. All of this came before executives met to decide the fate of Impact Wrestling.
This is why TNA is moving nights despite the rumors of their cancellation. It is also claimed that TNA will address talent about the rumors of the cancellation when they come back for tapings in June.
A lot of problems exist for TNA, and low ratings are certainly not helping things. If fans do not want to see this show cancelled, the best way to avoid it is to watch the show and improve its ratings. If Impact Wrestling brings in a strong number, clearly Destination America would not foolishly cancel a hot product. However, if they are not making a lot of money on it, why would they want to keep it?
