Is the post office open and will mail be delivered on Memorial Day? While many restaurants and retail stores will be open on May 25, postal employees have the federal holiday off. All U.S. Post Office locations will be closed on Monday, and mail delivery will not resume until Tuesday.

Memorial Day isn’t the only federal holiday observed by the U.S. Postal Service. According to the Holiday Schedule, there are 10 holidays observed by the USPS, with six more coming up in 2015 — Independence Day (July 4) is the next federal holiday on the list.

Although the U.S. Post Office will be closed on Memorial Day, you can prepare most packages for mailing by printing out online postage at no extra charge. Click-and-Ship allows you to calculate postage, print labels with a standard printer, and track your package online once it’s on its way.

If you really need to mail a package and can’t wait for the post office to re-open on Tuesday, you may have to drive it to its destination. Both UPS and FedEx will be closed to observe the Memorial Day holiday on Monday. Both shipping companies are closed on eight federal holidays and open for pickup and delivery services for two — Martin Luther King Day and Columbus Day.

In addition to the post office, UPS, and FedEx, most federal offices, including Social Security Administration and the Internal Revenue Service, will closed on May 25. The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), banks, and credit unions will be closed as well. Public schools, most private schools, and public libraries will also be closed for the holiday.

While it seems that just about everything is closed on Memorial Day, if you want to spend your day off at the mall or need food for your cookout, you’re in luck. Most retail stores will be open on Monday, including Walmart and Target.

Grocery stores and liquor stores may be open on a holiday schedule, so call ahead before you make the trip. If your local market is closed, it’s likely you will find everything you need for your Memorial Day bash at a Walmart Super Center — they are open 24 hours a day.

Movie theaters and restaurants will be open on Memorial Day, and if you are a member of the U.S. Military, take advantage of the free admission offered at hundreds of museums across the nation through the Blue Star Museum program.
