The Supergirl pilot episode of 2015, not expected to be aired by CBS until November, was leaked online overnight by several sources.
According to Geek.com, two torrent groups Dimension and LOL are responsible for distributing the pirated Supergirl pilot.
The two torrent groups are described by Geek.com as professional hackers.
These are the guys who do the ripping or find the rare file then push it out to their many followers. LOL beat DiMENSiON to debuting the Supergirl pilot by mere minutes, but LOL’s version looks to be a standard definition MP4 whereas DiMENSiON’s file is a whopping 6GB, 1080p HD file.
According to today’s Twitter fan feed and Geek, the leaked Supergirl pilot is clear, and contains no distortions or watermarks.
Business Insider reported today that the Supergirl pilot leaked online late Thursday night and “has already been downloaded 150,000 times.”
According to TorrentFreak.com, a realistic estimate is to expect the leaked Supergirl pilot episode to reach at least a quarter of a million downloads today.
The leak happens just a couple weeks after CBS officially announced it’s going forward with the series in it’s fall line up and six months ahead of its November premiere date.
A CBS representative declined to comment today.
Forbes reported this afternoon on how the high quality of the Supergirl pilot released is raising questions about the “validity of the leak itself” in their lengthy article provocatively titled ‘Supergirl’ Pilot Leak: Theft Or CBS Marketing Ploy?
Forbes asks an important question and one that has social media all abuzz with similar questions today.
Is it actually possible Warner Bros. (the show’s producing studio) and CBS (who declined to comment on the matter) put the pilot out themselves in order to get people talking this early? Unlike the leaks of Game of Thrones and Orphan Black back in April, the release of the Supergirl pilot is not very damaging to the show itself for a variety of reasons, the first of which being the fact that the pilot doesn’t air for another six months. This isn’t a case of four episodes leaking the day before the season premiere. This is a case of one episode leaking before there’s even a legitimate marketing campaign to be spoken for. Any damage the release of the pilot could have done to viewership is going to off-set by the fact that it’s most likely going to be screened at San Diego Comic-Con and New York Comic-Con in July and October for the same people downloading it now anyway.
As Forbes also notes, ” The damaging nature of a leak also comes down to its timing, and a leak six months ahead of schedule for a television series is not nearly as bad as one for a major blockbuster release such as X-Men Origins: Wolverine.”
Also, the early release of Supergirl would not be the first time the question of intention came up concerning a Warner Bros. pilot leak. In 2008, the studio was thought to be the source of a leak surrounding the pilot of Fringe, a show that would go on to survive five seasons on Fox and generate a cult following.
Fans on Twitter summed up some of Forbes questions with some humorous and apt posts.

Forbes is not alone in wondering whether this early release of Supergirl might turn out to be what they term a “genius beginning to what’s already looking to be a stellar marketing campaign.”
The trailer for Supergirl started off with a slow following, as Inquisitr reported, but has become one of the most watched CBS television trailers of all time.
