CBS’ Supergirl TV Show Is Not Like Other Comic Book Shows, But Will Other DC Shows Crossover?

Supergirl, CBS’ comic book TV show entry, has seemingly been the most talked about comic book adaptation as of late. The CW network jettisoned comic book TV show adaptation first with Smallville, then encouraged other networks with their smash hits Arrow and The Flash. However, it is now the Melissa Benoist led CBS TV series that is the most talked about comic book show. Blastr reports that CBS and Benoist’s Supergirl is not like any other comic book TV show to date.

Melissa Benoist’s Kora Zor-el is “more complicated” than most other comic book TV show characters on competing network, according to CBS’s Supergirl herself. She gave a more detailed explanation in an interview with Variety.

“She’s a strong female and a female hero which I think is so important and will speak to so many people at this time right now in the world. I also was so drawn to her humanity, even though she is an extraterrestrial with powers. I was drawn to how flawed and complicated she is. She’s more complicated than you see in superheroes nowadays. Greg breathed that life into her from the get-go. He even said to me in one of the auditions, ‘She’s like the Annie Hall of superheroes’ – and that sealed the deal for me. I was like, yes!”

Supergirl may be a lesser known super hero than The Flash or her cousin Superman, but with comic TV shows in high demand, anything is possible. Though earlier reports from Stephen Amell and Marc Guggeinheim about DC TV show universe and all the crossover possibilities, Cinema Blend reports that Arrow/The Flash/Supergirl/Legend’s of Tomorrow producer Greg Berlanti said a Supergirl crossover event is not likely.

“The network has said publicly at this point they’re going to keep her to themselves. I always approach the shows as a fan first, so I would love to see it. I think in success, all things are possible. But there’s a lot that would have to happen before everybody might say yes to that.”

CBS President Nina Tasslery also expressed a desire for their comic book TV show to remain in-house for the foreseeable future. This might disappoint many fans, it could be the newest Supergirl TV show’s saving grace, as many comic book TV shows are lost in the vault of failed show’s past.

The Inquisitr reported that the Adventures of Lois Clark Superman Dean Cain and the first live-action Supergirl Helen Slater are supposed to potentially have reoccurring roles in the new Supergirl, and Smallville‘s Supergirl Laura Vandervoort got a Twitter response from CBS Supergirl producer Andrew Kreisberg saying “We hope you’ll come play with us one day!”

So, though there might not be The Flash or Arrow or any crossovers soon, it appears that CBS’s entry into comic book TV shows might have the same attention to fandom that the CW shows have been given thus far.
