‘The Following’ Airs Its Final Episode, But Fans Want More
The Following aired its final episode on Fox, and there are some fans who want the series to keep going.
As previously reported by the Inquisitr, Fox cancelled The Following after three seasons due to low ratings. The announcement came less than two weeks before the current season was about to draw to a close. At the time, writer and executive producer Alexi Hawley told the fans that the series would end strongly.
Know this… the Following is going out in a blaze of glory. The next two weeks are back to back movies. An epic end to our journey.

Talking to Entertainment Weekly, Hawley was asked if the writers thought about changing the ending to The Following, once they found out the show had been cancelled. Hawley responded by saying there was no time to change it, if they really wanted to, but he’s satisfied with the way the series ended.
“Personally, I feel like the ending is incredibly dynamic in the way it would’ve held us into Season 4 if we had one, but I also feel like, as a place to leave off, it leaves off with more story left to tell, which I don’t think is a bad thing. In the audience’s mind, The Following is still alive and they can imagine where it might’ve gone.”
The final moments of The Following had Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon) presumably dead and leaving behind the life he had, including an unborn child with girlfriend Gwen (Zuleikha Robinson), to go after an organization of serial killers. Hawley said the plans for Season 4 were being discussed before they received the cancellation notice, but they did have some of it mapped out.
“You don’t hear a lot about serial killers who were uber-wealthy. That idea was really interesting to us. The idea that people with almost unlimited resources could actually protect themselves and their evil proclivities would’ve been an interesting direction to take the show.”
Hawley added that there was also a discussion of having Ryan return to his normal life in the fourth season.
“The hope in Season 4 would’ve been, by the end of the season, once he’s gotten his vengeance and closed every door that leads to danger, maybe he could’ve reunited with his family and held his child.”
There had been a rumor of Hulu possibly picking up The Following, but Hawley said he’s not sure if that’s going to happen.
“Look, we left the show with a very dynamic sendoff. I would love nothing more for the show to continue in some form.”
