5-Year-Old Boy Feeds A Homeless Man

We could all learn a lesson on compassion from little Josiah Duncan of Prattville, Alabama. The 5-year-old little boy was having breakfast with his mom, Ava Faulk, at their local Waffle House when Josiah spotted something, and someone, that caught his attention.

“We saw a man who was dirty holding a bag with his bike outside,” Faulk told WSFA. Josiah was taken aback by what he witnessed, and began peppering his mom with questions regarding the man outside.

Josiah’s mom explained to him that the man was homeless. Surely, he misunderstood as his eyes filled with wonder. “What does that mean?” he asked. Faulk tried to explain that the man simply had no place to call home. That was more than Josiah could swallow at the time, as he continued his barrage of questions.

“Where is his house? Where is his family? Where does he keep his groceries?” he pleaded for answers from his mom. However, according to 14 News, Josiah was really concerned that the man had no food and he had to be hungry. That’s when Josiah begged his mother to please buy this homeless man a meal. She, of course, agreed.

Faulk reveals what happened to WSFA as the man walked into the diner.

“He came in and sat down, and nobody really waited on him. So Josiah jumped up and asked him if he needed a menu because you can’t order without one.”

The homeless man was thankful, but was reserved and simply ordered a small burger until Josiah and his mom insisted that he could order whatever he wanted from the menu and it would be fine. The homeless man, with a look of pure gratitude, asked Faulk if he could have some bacon.

Faulk told him, “Get as much bacon as you want.”

As the food was spread out before the homeless man on the table, Josiah had one request before the man could eat. Josiah wanted to say the blessing over the food.

And that is exactly what Josiah did. With every single customer focused on the tender scene at hand, Josiah sang the blessing as loud as his little 5-year-old voice could sing.

“God our Father, God our Father, we thank you, we thank you, for our many blessings, for our many blessings, Amen, Amen.”

Faulk admitted to WSFA that the homeless man cried, and she cried, and in fact, everyone in the Waffle House cried.

The man ate every bite on his plate and was satisfied to the fullest — not just physically, but emotionally, as well. Josiah had truly blessed that homeless man that day. We can all learn from Josiah’s actions and make a huge impact on the world around us.
