Justin Bieber has a new tattoo. You didn’t think he was done, did you?
The 21-year-old’s latest inking is of two ornately drawn black “L’s” for “Low Lift” on his left bicep.
And, like all of the Biebs’ tattoos , there is a meaning behind his new design.
Pop Candies TV caught up with the superstar outside an IHOP in Los Angeles in the small hours of May 15, following his all-nighter in a recording studio. Before entering the famous pancake eatery, Bieber spoke to the paparazzi about the significance of his new tattoo.
“Oh, yeah, I just got back from the studio,” Bieber replied to one shutterbug’s question. He added, “I just got back from the studio, I just got this new tattoo.”
Rolling back the left sleeve of his black t-shirt, the heartthrob pointed out the inking, “Right here, this ‘L L,’” he said.
Bieber explained, “It’s ‘When you’re low, lift.’ Basically, ‘When your head is low, lift it up.’”
Elaborating, he went on, “‘Cause you never want to live in shame. Do it.”
Before heading into the IHOP, the heartthrob told one lensman, “I’m working on the album right now. Just exhausted, it’s like 5:30 in the morning. [I’m going] to get some pancakes (sic).”
Asked how his new album was coming, the Biebs replied, “It’s going awesome man.”
Bieber’s newest tattoo jostles for space among his many inkings. These include the words “Believe,” Forgive,” and “Patience.” He also has a bass clef behind one of his ears, Roman numerals of his mother (Pattie Mallette’s) , birth date, and the likeness of her eyes inked.
Into the mix of these are an owl motif, other animals, and an angel, which may or may not represent ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez . Bieber also has a jester, the famed Banksy “balloon girl,” an image of an Indian head, a bald eagle, a knight, a castle, and formations of clouds and waves inked on his body.
Openly Christian, the Biebs has numerous tattoos loaded with religious symbolism. He has a cross tattooed in the center of his chest. Psalm 119:105 is inked on the back of his right shoulder, and he has hands in a prayer pose and the likeness of Jesus Christ inked.
The new “LL” lettering fits right in.
Fittingly, Bieber’s “When you’re low, lift” tattoo comes after his recent, reflective interview with Seventeen magazine.
Admitting to his unhappiness during his turbulent past couple of years, Bieber told the teen publication, “I was rebelling a little bit.”
The singer recalled, “I was getting cockier and cockier . I didn’t have people to check me. I looked back and I was disappointed in myself.”
The Canadian, who spent his impressionable years in the spotlight when his career exploded at age 15, repeated that he has drawn a line under his past behavior. “You have to own up to the mistakes,” he said.
He added, “You have to say, ‘I’m sorry if I’ve let you down.’”
Bieber then admitted, “I always want to be honest and let people know that those mistakes aren’t who I am. Who I am is someone who really cares about people.”
It seems clear that Bieber’s ongoing self-work and guidance from spiritual influences in his life is prompting positive reflection, thinking, and behavior in the young star.
