Yves ‘Jetman’ Rossy Soars Two Miles Above Dubai In A Video That’s Not For The Faint Of Heart
Yves “Jetman” Rossy has built himself a pair of wings and used them to soar at 120 mph above the futuristic city of Dubai. The incredible feat brings humankind one step towards what seems like an impossible dream: Flying.
The Jetman and new flying partner, BASE jumper Vince Reffet, performed some high-altitude, synchronized flying over the city recently and the achievement — “twin human formation flight” — is a first in the history of aviation, Forbes reported.
For the Jetman, being able to look down upon Dubai with a partner makes the experience much more exciting, he told ABC News.
“It’s really a new dimension, because alone in the sky is great, but it’s much greater to be with a partner. You have the inside view. You are flying, and at the same time you have the picture of how you are in the air.”
And the daredevil duo captured their historic flight on film; the video took six months to shoot.
Wearing 120-pound suits, the Jetman and Reffet are dropped from a helicopter two-and-a-half miles above the Earth, soar past Dubai’s — and the world’s — tallest skyscraper, over the city’s Burj Khalifa, The Palm Jumeirah and the Liwa desert. They perform loops and fly in formation with planes, Forbes added.
These mind-blowing flights are short — only 15 minutes — and cover about 35 miles.
Their flight is made possible by a winged propulsion system, including “four model jet turbines and carbon-fiber wings,” which are strapped to the Jetman via a backpack, the International Business Times added.
The flight is old hat for the Jetman, however; he’s already flown over Rio de Janeiro and Mount Fuji.
And it took him 15 tries to get the design right. His and Vince’s stunts over Dubai will help them tweak the design — they’ve already developed an upgraded wing and will be given access to various skydiving facilities to keep the development moving forward.
Which means Dubai may be the stage for a historic milestone for humankind — taking to the skies with nothing between us and the clouds but a fancy suit.
“I want to make possible what humans have only been dreaming of and I believe that Dubai provides the right environment and infrastructure for me to achieve this.”
