Justin Bieber Pays Tribute To Pattie Mallette On Mother’s Day: ‘Thank You For Not Giving Up On Me’
Justin Bieber has joined the billions extending messages of thanks and gifts on Mother’s Day this year on May 10.
The 21-year-old singer publicly marked Happy Mother’s Day with a revelatory and sweet Instagram message, alongside a pic of his mother, Pattie Mallette, 39, in what appears to be the cockpit of a small airplane.
“This little 4’9 woman may not look like a mom but she is, and she’s the best at it!” Bieber’s note began. The singer added the following.
“This woman taught me everything I know, how to love how to be compassionate how to be strong when the only thing u wanna be is weak how to stand when all you want to do is fall.”
“If it wasn’t for this woman lets just say I would have had a way LONGER stupid phase. I love u and thank u for not giving up on me!”
Bieber’s Mother’s Day tribute to Mallette comes after his admission to USA Today back in March that the pair drifted apart during his last two drama-filled years.
When asked in the interview if it was hard for his mother “not be able to connect with” him during that period, the Biebs replied, “Of course, yeah, we lost our relationship for awhile.”
He continued, “She couldn’t really tell me anything; she would try, but I wasn’t listening to anybody and that sort of sucked. But our relationship is getting better now; we’re getting it back.”
In that same interview, Bieber revealed his relationship with his manager Scooter Braun also suffered, but said the duo is now back on the same page.
“He’s in the picture, yeah,” the singer recalled at the time. “We also were on some weird terms, too, but now we’re back 100 percent.”
As is widely known, Mallette, largely raised Bieber on her own for the first few years of his life after she gave birth to him at the age of 17 on March 1, 1994, in London, Ontario. After a traumatizing childhood, during which Mallette says she was sexually molested by a male babysitter, the grandfather of one of her friends, and older neighborhood children from the age of three, she went on to a troubled adolescence, which is not surprising.
In her best selling autobiography, Nowhere But Up, Mallette revealed she used a variety of drugs, including LSD, alcohol, and marijuana when she was 14-years-old. Shoplifting and petty vandalism followed.
At 16, Mallette began a relationship with Jeremy Bieber. After leaving home and suffering from emotional issues, she attempted suicide at 17 and briefly stayed in a mental ward. At around this time, Mallette embraced Christianity and has credited her belief for turning her life around. After she became pregnant, she moved into an unit for unwed mothers where she stayed for a while after Justin’s birth. She and Jeremy reportedly parted ways just 10 months later.
The rest is ongoing history. Mallette and Bieber moved to Atlanta, Georgia with Braun in 2007 after he came across the singer’s R&B covers on YouTube. While Justin became a teen superstar, Pattie was by his side throughout. She later developed a career as a film producer and author.
Bieber has spoken often of his relationship with Mallette, whom he immortalized in a track titled “Turn To You.” He has publicly thanked her for supporting him in numerous award acceptance speeches. More recently, he cited Pattie in a raw, confessional video he shot in January.
“I just want to make the best impression on people and be kind and loving and gentle and soft. And, although people can call me a ‘softie,’ that’s how my mom raised me,” the Biebs said to the camera.
On Sunday, Bieber tweeted, “@pattiemallette happy Mother’s Day. I love you,” with a link to his Instagram pic. In comments at the posting, Pattie replied, “Thank you baby. Amazing son move. Love you. Xo”
Say what you will about Justin Bieber, but that’s an beautiful Mother’s Day message.
