‘Girl Meets World’: Mr. Feeny Is Back

Girl Meets World already had a built-in fan following when it debuted on the Disney Channel last year, thanks to its predecessor Boy Meets World. Fans of the original show–which followed Cory Matthews and his family as he traveled down the road we call life–were stoked to learn that the revival would feature several characters they had grown to love in their younger years. Now, they can count on seeing Mr. Feeny–played by William Daniels–at least once every season because co-creator Michael Jacobs says he’ll make it so.

“We want to start a tradition that Billy is in the first one every season. We wanted an authority figure that was absolutely implacable. I think he gave the show gravitas. I think he made the show more than it would have been if we had ever gone with somebody else. He was eminently believable in his care about the kids but doing it in the proper distance so that the kids were allowed to have their own lives,” Jacobs told the L.A. Times.

For fans of Boy Meets World, Feeny quickly became a favorite character with his dry wit and for the amount of compassion he showed his students. Many viewers must have wished they had an authority figure in their lives who possessed such a nature because when the news broke that Girl Meets World was going to be a reality, the call for a Feeny comeback was strong.

Now that Season 1 has set up the plot arc for Girl Meets World, Season 2 can focus on guest appearances, and boy will there be a lot of them. Old favorites will play a huge part starting on Monday, May 11, when the show kicks off a week-long event that features five new episodes. And for those of you wondering, yes, Will Friedel will be on hand.

“We’re going to have guest appearances from almost everybody in the original cast. We’re going to resolve story-lines from the original show while keeping it the new show,” Jacobs said. “Will Friedel will visit us three times this year and his performances are absolutely brilliant. He’s just one of the funniest people alive. The combination of his funny and his particular brand of heart is a signature for the piece.”
