Brittney Griner Weds Glory Johnson, Awaits WNBA Ruling On Domestic Violence Charges
Phoenix Mercury standout Brittney Griner married her fiancee Glory Johnson on Friday, just weeks after the two were arrested for domestic violence that resulted in Griner pleading guilty and entering a diversion program. According to an Instagram posted by Johnson, she and Griner said their “I do’s” in an outside ceremony in Phoenix.
Johnson donned a beautiful champagne wedding gown that she had selected on an episode of Say Yes to the Dress, while Griner opted for a beige suit for the ceremony. The happy couple were all smiles as they exchanged vows at the Pointe Tapatio Cliffs in front of a small gathering of approximately 75 guests.
Griner and Johnson, both WBNA players, had gotten engaged back in August. The two seemingly had a storybook romance as told by their social media presence, but the illusion was shattered on April 22 when an argument turned into a physical altercation and both Griner and Johnson were arrested for domestic violence. While both women showed signs of physical injuries, Brittney Griner appears to have taken responsibility for the matter, having pled guilty to domestic disturbance last week and being reprimanded to a diversion program as her sentence.
As Griner and Johnson are celebrating their nuptials, their fans are awaiting word from the WNBA as to whether or not any punishment will be inflicted on the pair for the arrests that may keep them from playing this season. So far, the WNBA has not given a hint as to what their response to the situation will be.
Earlier in the week, reports of Brittney Griner‘s absence from the Team USA training camp sparked sadness among women’s basketball fans, as they wondered if the WNBA MVP would even be suiting up to represent the U.S. in the 2016 Olympics. Many expressed a hope that this wasn’t a sign the young star was going to forego not only the Olympic Games, but basketball in general.
Despite their troubles, both what is behind them and what may lie ahead in the form of WNBA’s response, yesterday, Brittney Griner and Glory Johnson were just a newlywed couple taking in the moment of a very special day. They continued the celebration by enjoying a sit down dinner with their guests, dancing their first dance to Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud,” and sharing a mixture of their favorite cakes–Griner’s white, with Johnson’s red velvet.
And Brittney Griner’s statement last week in response to the domestic violence incident gives us hope the couple will make it. Griner stated, “I am committed to making positive changes and I plan to use what I have learned to set a good example and help make a difference in the world around me.”
